Pieter Bruegel the Elder's series of "Virtues" and "Vices". The problem of interpretation

Одна из главных проблем исследования связана с характером отношения серий рисунков Питера Брейгеля Старшего «Грехи» и «Добродетели» к мировоззрению самого художника. Другая проблема связана с зависимостью образного мира данных серий от желаний издателя Иеронима Кока и потребностей потенциальных покупателей гравюр. Из выводов работы следует, что Питер Брейгель Старший проявил себя как независимый художник-интеллектуал.

One of the main problems of the study is related to the nature of the relationship between the series of drawings by Peter Brueghel the Elder "Sins" and "Virtues" and the worldview of the artist himself. Another problem is related to the dependence of the figurative world of these series on the desires of the publisher Hieronymus Cock and the needs of potential buyers of engravings. We argue that Peter Bruegel the Elder showed himself as an independent artist-inelectual.
