On the Study of Russian Prefixed Verbs in the 19th Century

Abstract

The article focuses on the Russian prefixed verbs in the 18th and 19th centuries (from Lomonosov to Shakhmatov): the genetic relation of verb prefixes with prepositions, wide variety of verb derivation and its role in the expression of the grammatical meanings of tense and aspect. The paper shows the evolution of views on the composition of verbal aspect (from a multimember to a two-member grammatical category). However, at that time verbal aspect was not differentiated from Aktionsart, and the problem of aspect was not definitively resolved due to the constant interaction of aspect with the derivational semantics of the verb prefixes.
