Functional and Stylistic Characteristics and Translation of Terms in English Newspaper Articles

Abstract

This article explores shifts in meaning of terms, which take place in a translation process. The analysis of shifts was made on the basis of various newspaper texts (such as The Guardian, The Washington Post etc.) and their translations. In the first part of the article we take a close look at some scientific conceptions and approaches to the problem of translation quality assessment of both Russian and foreign scientists. In the second part of the article we analyse terms and translations of these terms on the basis of the following classification: minor errors, major errors and critical errors. As a result of this analysis we can state that shifts in meaning may significantly influence the meaning of a text, bring false associations, provoke wrong attitude to the subject of a message or mislead a reader.
