Models of artificial reality in Martin Kušej's theatre as applied to opera productions

Abstract

Магистерская диссертация посвящена анализу творческого метода австрийского театрального режиссёра Мартина Кушея на материале его оперных постановок. Целью исследования является осмысление и концептуализация эстетического проекта М. Кушея. В исторической части работы исследованы направления развития европейского театра ХХ века, позволяющие понять эстетические принципы и методы работы М. Кушея. В теоретической части работы постулируются принципиальные моменты эстетики Мартина Кушея, а также особенности его работы в оперном театре. Объектом исследования являются 18 оперных спектаклей Мартина Кушея, из них наиболее подробно – «Дон Жуан», «Милосердие Тита» и «Фиделио». Автор опирается на методологию постструктурализма в следующих ее сущностных вариациях: эпистемологический анализ М. Фуко, деконструктивные практики Ж. Деррида, аналитика Возвышенного Ф. Лаку-Лабарта и Ф. Лиотара. Концепция театра возвышенного разрабатывается на основании трудов Э. Бёрка, И. Канта, Ф. Лаку-Лабарта. Материалом исследования послужили посещенные спектакли, видеозаписи спектаклей (на DVD), материалы буклетов к спектаклям и DVD, научные и крит­ические материалы, посвящённые творчеству Мартина Кушея, на русском, английском, немецком, итальянском и французском языках, ­интервью с режиссёром, материалы Интерн­ет-сайтов театров, а также партитуры и либретто опер.­ Научная новизна работы определяется отсутствием академической литературы на европейских языках, посвященной Мартину Кушею и его спектаклям.

The Master’s thesis is dedicated to the analysis of the artistic method of Martin Kušej (Austrian theatre director) as applied to his opera productions. The objective is to create a conception of Martin Kušej’s aesthetic project. The retrospective part of the work explores the directions of development of the European theatre of the 20th century that can help us effectively analyze Martin Kušej's aesthetic principles and methods of work. The theoretical part of the work postulates the fundamental principles of Martin Kušej's aesthetics and the idiosyncrasies of his work on opera productions. The object of the research includes 18 opera productions by Martin Kušej; the most detailed analysis is provided for the productions of "Don Giovanni", "La clemenza di Tito" and "Fidelio". The methodology used in the work is based on the following post-structuralist approaches: Michel Foucault’s epistemological analysis, Jacques Derrida’s deconstructive practices and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe and Jean-François Lyotard’s analysis of the Sublime. The concept of the theatre of the sublime is developed after the works of Edmund Burke, Immanuel Kant and Philippe Lacoue-Labarthe. The sources of the thesis include live productions, video recordings (on DVD), production booklets and booklets from DVD editions, academic papers criticism of Martin Kušej’s works, interviews with Martin Kušej, web-sites of productions’ venues, opera scores and libretti. The languages of the sources include Russian, English, German, Italian and French. The academic novelty of the thesis ensues from the absence of academic research of Martin Kušej and his productions in any European language.
