Personal and collective memory in the novel "Moon Tiger" by Penelope Lively

Abstract

Роман Пенелопы Лайвли «Лунный тигр» (1987) проблематизирует вопросы истории и времени, памяти и воспоминаний. Особое внимание уделяется воздействию прошлого на настоящее, а также искусной игре со временем, в которую автор вплетает личные воспоминания в события мирового масштаба. Цель диссертации – определить место памяти, личных и коллективных воспоминаний в «Лунном тигре» и в изучении их влияния на жанровую природу романа. Поставлены следующие задачи: определить понятия памяти, личных и коллективных воспоминаний, основываясь на работах Мориса Хальбвакса, Яна и Алейды Ассман; вписать роман в проблематику творчества Пенелопы Лайвли; дать определение жанровой природе романа; провести нарратологический анализ текста; выявить формы реализации личных и коллективных воспоминаний в романе. При изучении теории памяти привлекались работы Мориса Хальбвакса, Яна Ассман, Яна Войцика-Эндрюса, Мариона Гимнича и т. д. Для определения характерных особенностей коллективных воспоминаний были использованы труды Рейнхарта Козеллека, Пьера Нора и Алейды Ассман. Изучение «Лунного тигра» открывает возможность рассмотреть вопросы памяти в широком контексте истории и социокультурной среды. Анализ текста романа помогает понять, как культурное и историческое наследие воздействует на формирование как личной, так и коллективной памяти, а также как оно изменяется в течение времени. Следовательно, изучение данной темы является актуальным, поскольку оно затрагивает важные аспекты роли памяти в жизни человека, использование литературных методов для передачи моментов прошлого и их влияние на индивидуальное и общественное сознание. Диссертация состоит из введения, трех глав, заключения и списка использованной литературы, который насчитывает 50 источников, из них 39 – на иностранных языках (английском).

Penelope Lively's novel Moon Tiger (1987) problematizes questions of history and time, memory and recollection. Particular attention is paid to the impact of the past on the present, as well as the skillful play with time in which the author weaves personal memories into global events. The purpose of the dissertation is to determine the place of memory, personal and collective memories in Moon Tiger and to study their influence on the genre nature of the novel. The objectives are as follows: to define the concepts of memory, personal and collective memories, based on the works of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan and Aleida Assmann; to fit the novel into the problems of Penelope Lively’s work; to define the genre nature of the novel; to conduct a narratological analysis of the text; to identify forms of realization of personal and collective memories in the novel. The works of Maurice Halbwachs, Jan Assmann, Jan Wojcik-Andrews, Marion Gymnich and etc. were used in the study of the theory of memory. In addition to this, the works of Reinhart Koselleck, Pierre Nora and Aleida Assmann were implemented in order to determine the characteristic features of collective memories. The study of Moon Tiger opens up the opportunity to consider issues of memory in the broader context of history and sociocultural environment. Analysis of the text of the novel helps to understand how cultural and historical heritage influences the formation of both personal and collective memory, as well as how it changes over time. Therefore, the study of this topic is of great relevance since it touches on important aspects of the role of memory in human life, the use of literary methods to convey moments of the past and their influence on individual and social consciousness. The dissertation consists of the introduction, three chapters, the conclusion and a list of references, which includes 50 sources, 39 of which are in foreign languages (English).
