Economic Aspects of Action in Role-Playing Computer Games and their Impact on the Social Relationships of Players

Abstract

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена исследованию влияния виртуальных экономических систем на социальные отношения игроков в ролевых онлайн-играх. В качестве примера были выбраны две популярные игры: Roblox: Adopt Me! и GTA 5 RP. Работа анализирует ключевые характеристики виртуальных экономик, включая виртуальные валюты, источники дохода, торговые игровые механики, роль микротранзакций в игровом процессе и другие, а также рассматривает их влияние на формирование социальных структур, иерархий, конфликтов, ценностей и норм поведения в игровых сообществах. В основе исследования лежит теоретическая концепция виртуальной экономики, предложенная Э. Кастроновой, а также работы других авторов, которые изучают эту тему с социологической, экономической, психологической и правовой точек зрения. Результаты исследования показывают, что игры с экономическим акцентом (как Adopt Me!) могут способствовать формированию более выраженной социальной стратификации и поверхностных социальных связей, в то время как игры с акцентом на социальные взаимодействия между игроками (как GTA 5 RP) могут способствовать созданию более глубоких социальных связей и формированию более сложной и многогранной социальной среды. Работа может быть полезна для разработчиков игр, предоставляя лучшее понимание того, как оптимизировать игровой дизайн для создания более устойчивых и социально насыщенных игровых миров.

This final qualifying work is devoted to the study of the influence of virtual economic systems on the social relations of players in online role-playing games. Two popular games were chosen as an example: Roblox: Adopt Me! and GTA 5 RP. The work analyzes the key characteristics of virtual economies, including virtual currencies, sources of income, trading game mechanics, the role of microtransactions in gameplay and others, and also examines their impact on the formation of social structures, hierarchies, conflicts, values and norms of behavior in gaming communities. The study is based on the theoretical concept of the virtual economy proposed by E. Castronova, as well as the work of other authors who study this topic from sociological, economic, psychological and legal points of view. The study's findings suggest that games with an economic emphasis (like Adopt Me!) can foster greater social stratification and shallow social connections, while games with an emphasis on social interactions between players (like GTA 5 RP) can foster deeper social connections and the formation of a more complex and multifaceted social environment. The work may benefit game developers by providing a better understanding of how to optimize game design to create more sustainable and socially rich game worlds.
