| ru_RU |
dc.description.abstract | This paper examines bilateral relations between South Korea and Japan in the context of territorial and historical disputes. Both states are interested in cooperating with each other to maintain their positions and security in the Asia-Pacific region, as they have repeatedly stated. However, bilateral relations increasingly fail to develop because of a return to the past. The territorial dispute over the Dokdo/Takeshima islands as well as the conflict over "comfort women" and forced labor during the Korean colonial period are serious problems that hamper relations. Relations have escalated under the former South Korean president, Moon Jae-in, but with the coming to power of the new president, Yoon Seok-yeol, who pursues a diametrically opposed policy towards Japan, it is necessary to analyze the "new round" in bilateral relations. Establishing amicable relations between the countries will require a considerable amount of time because the disagreements are protracted and unstable. The dynamism of the disputes creates a need for constant monitoring of the situation, in order to identify factors that can explain the further development of relations between the countries. | en_GB |
