Methods of formation of French demonyms: A historical perspective

Abstract

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена способам образования французских катойконимов. В теоретической части этой работы рассматривается взаимосвязь между французскими топонимами и катойконимами, в этой части уделяется внимание работам исследователей французских топонимов и катойконимов. В практической части данной выпускной квалификационной работы исследуется продуктивность отдельных суффиксов, использующихся для образования названий жителей французских коммун и департаментов, а также специфика образования катойконимов в отдельных регионах. В этой части также рассматривается специфика образования катойконимов новых коммун Франции. По результатам проведенного исследования был сделан вывод, что суффиксальный способ словообразования является наиболее продуктивным для образования французских катойконимов, а самыми продуктивными суффиксами – -ois/-oises, -iens/-iennes, -ais/-aises.

This graduation thesis focuses on the methods of formation of French demonyms. The theoretical part of this thesis considers the relationship between French toponyms and demonyms, paying attention to the works of the researchers of this topic. The practical part of this thesis examines the productivity of individual suffixes used to form the names of residents of French communes and departments, as well as the particular characteristics of the formation of demonyms in individual regions. This thesis also examines specific features of demonyms of new French communes. According to the results of the study conducted for this thesis, the most productive method of formation of French demonyms is suffixation, with most productive suffixes being -ois/-oises, -iens/-iennes, -ais/-aises
