Onomastic space in the translation of children literature: A case study J. K. Rowling’s works

Abstract

Настоящая выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена изучению способов перевода имен собственных, составляющих ономастическое пространство произведений детской художественной литературы, на материале текстов британской писательницы Дж. К. Роулинг. Основное внимание в работе уделяется изучению ономастического пространства художественного текста и поэтонима как его основного объекта исследования, в частности в аспекте перевода. Актуальность выбранной темы обусловлена высокой популярностью переводной детской литературы в России, в том числе с английского языка, и отсутствием общего алгоритма перевода имен собственных, в особенности говорящих имен собственных, составляющих ономастикон таких произведений. Сложность перевода говорящих имен собственных заключается в том, что помимо номинативной, они выполняют также информационно- и эмоционально-стилистическую функции, которые зачастую выходят на первый план, особенно в произведениях жанра фэнтези и сказки. Объектом исследования послужили имена собственные, составляющие ономастическое пространство художественного произведения для детей, в аспекте перевода. Предметом исследования стали способы перевода этих имен собственных на русский язык. Проведенный анализ отобранных из четырех произведений Дж. К. Роулинг поэтонимов, составляющих их ономастикон, и их переводов позволил выявить основные способы передачи таких единиц на русский язык и выработать алгоритм их перевода. Практическая ценность исследования состоит в возможности использования полученных результатов на семинарах и лекциях по переводоведению, а также непосредственно в практике перевода.

This research deals with the study of methods of translation of proper names that make up the onomastic space of works of children’s fiction based on the four works by J.K. Rowling. The research focuses on the study of onomastic space of a literary text and ‘poetonym’, which is a proper name in a work of fiction, as its main research object, in particular in the aspect of translation. The relevance of the topic is due to the high popularity of translated children’s literature in Russia and the lack of a single algorithm for translating proper names, especially semantically loaded ones, that make up the onomasticon of such works. The difficulty of translating semantically loaded names is that they have not only the nominative function but also the stylistic one, which often comes to the fore, especially in fantasy books and fairy tales. The object of the research is the proper names that make up the onomastic space of a work of fiction for children, in the aspect of translation. The subject of the research is the methods of translating these proper names into Russian. The analysis of the proper names that make up the onomasticon of four works by J.K. Rowling and their translations into Russian allowed us to identify the main methods of rendering such onomastic units into the Russian language and to develop an algorithm for their translation. The practical significance of the research is the possibility of using the research findings at seminars and lectures on translation studies, as well as directly in the translation practice.
