The geography of the activity of transnational corporations in the Caribbean region in the 21st century

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационной работы направлена на выявление характерных черт и динамики присутствия зарубежных внерегиональных ТНК в регионе Карибского бассейна. Новизна работы заключается в комплексном изучении деятельности ТНК на государства региона, а также слабой изученностью данного вопроса в отечественной литературе. В работе применяются методы изучения активности ТНК на рынке капиталов государств, а именно через анализ: потоков ПИИ в государства региона, доли ПИИ в ВВП государств, изменение объёма и структуры экспорта. В исследовании рассматривается вне инвестиционная деятельность ТНК в добывающей, обрабатывающей промышленности и в сельском хозяйстве путём анализа отчётности на официальных сайтах компаний и публикаций ООН. Использование картографического метода было направлено на определение и визуализацию процесса смены стратегий ТНК, применяемых для каждого государства региона. В рамках исследования были выявлены изменения: потоков ПИИ, структуры экспорта и его направлении, что отражает динамику деятельности ТНК в целом в регионе в XXI веке, включая главные экономические кризисы 2008 и 2020 годов. В работе раскрываются причины активизации деятельности ТНК перед началом изучаемого периода. Определены изменения в деятельности ТНК в регионе: Ряд государств начал рассматриваться для привлечения ресурсно-ориентированных производств вместо затратно-ориентированных на фоне роста цен на сырьё; изменились основные отрасли промышленности в регионах с затртано-ориентированной стратегией; На рынки государств Карибского региона начали проникать ТНК КНР в том числе в рамках реализации стратегии Один пояс Один Путь. Кризисные события 2008 и 2020 года приводили к спаду активно ТНК в регионе, но они также становились и явлениями, приводившими к смене стратегий, применяемых к государству. Вне инвестиционная деятельность ТНК в регионе в XXI веке получила масштабное развитие, ряд компаний всецело придерживаются мировым стандартам, тогда как ряд других компаний до сих пор злостно нарушают прав местных жителей и причиняют вред окружающей среде.

The final qualifying work is aimed at identifying the characteristics and dynamics of the presence of foreign non-regional TNCs in the Caribbean region. The novelty of the work lies in a comprehensive study of the activities of TNCs in the states of the region, as well as the poor knowledge of this issue in the domestic literature. The paper uses methods for studying the activity of TNCs in the capital market of states, namely through the analysis of: FDI flows to the states of the region, the share of FDI in the GDP of states, changes in the volume and structure of exports. The study examines the non-investment activities of TNCs in mining, manufacturing and agriculture by analyzing reports on the official websites of companies and UN publications. The use of the cartographic method was aimed at identifying and visualizing the process of changing the strategies of TNCs used for each state in the region. As part of the study, changes were identified: FDI flows, the structure of exports and its direction, which reflects the dynamics of the activities of TNCs as a whole in the region in the 21st century, including the main economic crises of 2008 and 2020. The paper reveals the reasons for the increased activity of TNCs before the beginning of the period under study. Changes in the activities of TNCs in the region were identified: A number of states began to be considered for attracting resource-oriented industries instead of cost-oriented ones against the backdrop of rising prices for raw materials; the main industries have changed in regions with a cost-oriented strategy; PRC TNCs began to penetrate the markets of the Caribbean region, including as part of the implementation of the One Belt One Road strategy. The crisis events of 2008 and 2020 led to an active decline in TNCs in the region, but they also became phenomena that led to a change in the strategies applied to the state. Non-investment activities of TNCs in the region in the 21st century have received large-scale development, a number of companies fully adhere to world standards, while a number of other companies still maliciously violate the rights of local residents and cause harm to the environment.
