Theme of mind in Alexander Griboyedov’s comedy "Woe from Wit"

Abstract

Настоящая работа посвящена теме ума в комедии А.С. Грибоедова «Горе от ума». Актуальность исследования объясняется необходимостью детального рассмотрения темы ума в главной комедии А. С. Грибоедова, что позволит уточнить представления об этом произведении. В ходе анализа были достигнуты следующие результаты: проанализирована специфика осмысления феномена ума в западном литературном сознании XVIII – начала XIX веков как истока его интерпретации русскими просветителями; выявлены особенности воплощения темы ума в философии русских просветителей XVIII – начала XIX веков; исследованы сходства и различия в понимании ума в основных словарях XVIII – середины XIX веков. На основании вышеизложенного рассмотрено своеобразие преломления темы ума в комедии «Горе от ума»: ум для Чацкого – это слово, несущее просвещенческие идеалы в общество, глупость – молчание, следование ложным идеям. Мнимое безумие Чацкого состоит в его страсти к собственным идеям, идущим вразрез с общепринятыми. В комедии все герои мыслят разными категориями, следовательно, говорят на разных языках – в этом заключается горе каждого персонажа и, прежде всего, горе Чацкого, обманутого собственными ожиданиями.

The present paper deals with the topic of mind in the A. S. Griboyedov's Comedy "Woe from wit". Relevance of this research is due to the need for detailed examination of the topic of mind in the main comedy of A. S. Griboyedov, what will allow to specify understanding of the comedy. In the analysis the following results were obtained: specificity of comprehension the "mind" phenomenon in the western literary mind in the 18th and early 19th centuries as the source of its interpretation by Russian enlighteners was analysed; the features of implementation the topic of mind in the Russian enlighteners' philosophy in the 18th and early 19th centuries were identified; similarities and differences in understanding of mind in different dictionaries in the 18th and middle 19th centuries were examined. In view of the foregoing the originality of understanding the topic of mind in the comedy "Woe from wit" is considered: Chatsky understands "mind" as the word, which spreads the ideals of the Enlightenment in the society, "stupidity" means for him silence and following to the false ideas. Imaginary madness of Chatsky is in his obsession in his own ideas, which are very different from the generally accepted ones. All the characters think in different categories and therefore speak different languages. Therein lies the woe of each character and first of all of Chatsky, who is deceived by his own expectations.
