При этом к их использованию прибегает лишь ограниченная часть членов локального сообщества Химары, а самоопределение через тот или иной ярлык не отражается на выборе языка коммуникации. dc.description.abstract | The present paper is devoted to the study of the language situation in the bilingual Albanian-Greek community of Himara (South Albania). Analysing the linguistic behaviour of the bilinguals in Himara from diachronic and synchronic perspectives, I examine how the functional distribution of Albanian and Greek in different spheres of communication has transformed over the last century, how these languages are used in everyday communication today and how the labels of ethnolinguistic identity convey the notions of community members about the languages that are used in the community and history. The study is based on the recordings made during my ethnolinguistic field research in Himara in August 2021. When collecting material, I used the following methods: participant observation, spontaneous interviews and focused interviews with the use of the sociolinguistic questionnaire. I use the method of critical discourse analysis to interpret the material, therefore the linguistic practices of community members are considered in their relation to social, cultural and political processes [Fairclough, Wodak 2010]. The theoretical basis of the study is the comprehensive scientific approach of critical sociolinguistics, which allows me to analyse a wide range of issues from the perspective of classical sociolinguistics, anthropological linguistics, ethnography and critical discourse analysis [Heller 2002; Heller et al. 2017]. The study showed that some tendencies in the use of Albanian and Greek in different social situations have undergone significant changes during the 20th century, while others remained relatively stable. Thus, since at least the beginning of the 20th century, Greek remains dominant in situations of "domestic" communication, i.e., communication with family members as well as friends and neighbours who belong to the local bilingual community. In addition, Greek prevails in the sphere of religious life, both in liturgy and personal communication within the church and on Orthodox holidays. Albanian, on the other hand, dominates communication with "outsiders", e.g. with the inhabitants of the Albanian villages surrounding Himara in the first half of the 20th century, with Albanian officers stationed on the Ionian coast since the early 1960s and with seasonal service workers and tourists since the 1990s. The functional distribution of languages in the spheres of school education, administrative communication and social events has undergone a considerable transformation over time. They experienced the very abrupt, intense, almost forced introduction of Albanian from the late 1940s, caused by the policies of the communist authorities in Albania. Today, Greek is gradually returning to the more formal spaces of everyday life, as both the Greek school and the Orthodox church operate anew. Even though the generally accepted norms of speech behaviour in various social situations are significant for the members of the bilingual community, the orientation on the expectations and competencies of each particular listener dominates the language choice, which characterizes the speech pattern of bilingual speakers as an unmarked choice [Myers-Scotton 2006]. The analysis of the labels of ethnolinguistic identity filogrek and filoshqiptar showed that the meaning of these concepts changes over time following the historical and political situation. They reflect the most conflictual periods of South Albania's history, from the drawing of state borders in the early 20th century to the communist terror. Today, these labels may be used not only to negatively characterise members of an opposing group but also to mark the opinions of the speakers themselves of the local population and the history of the region. However, only a limited number of the locals use the labels of ethnolinguistic identity, and self-definition through them does not affect the language choice.
