Illegal excavations and trade in archaeological antiquities in Russia in the second half of the 19th – first half of the 20th centuries

Abstract

Данное исследование комплексно рассматривает феномен торговли археологическими древностями в Российской империи, а также незаконные или полулегальных раскопки на государственных землях. На конкретных примерах показаны пути формирования частных и государственных археологических коллекций. Работа основана на анализе научных публикаций, публикаций современников и материалов из архивов РГИА и РО НА ИИМК РАН. В качестве основной парадигмы в исследовании использован системно-исторический подход. В результате исследования были сделаны выводы, что охранное законодательство Российской империи развивалось под влиянием европейского опыта, но с большим отставанием. Однако уже действующее законодательство нередко просто не соблюдалось. В таких условиях активно развивался антикварный рынок, а расхитители и торговцы древностями оставались безнаказанными. За счёт антикварного рынка сформировалось множество частных и государственных коллекций как в России, так и за рубежом. Научное сообщество и некоторые высокопоставленные чиновники понимали масштабы проблемы, но попытки ограничить торговлю древностями неизменно сталкивались с сопротивлением власти, представлявшей интересы крупнейших землевладельцев, включая церковь. Данное исследование является первой обобщающей работой, посвященной проблеме добычи и торговли археологическими предметами в Российской империи второй половины XIX – первой половины XX вв.

The aim of this study was to investigate the phenomenon of trade in archaeological antiquities in the Russian Empire, as well as illegal or semi-legal excavations on public lands. Particular examples show the ways of forming private and state archaeological collections. The work is based on the analysis of scientific publications, publications of contemporaries and materials from the archives of the Russian State Historical Archive and archive of Institute of the History of Material Culture of Russian Academy of Sciences. The systematically-historical approach is used as the main paradigm in the study. The study showed that protective archeological legislation in the Russian Empire developed under the influence of the European experience, but with a large lag. However, the existing legislation often was not observed. In such conditions, the antique market was actively developing. So robbers and dealers of antiquities remained unpunished. Many private and public collections both in Russia and abroad have been formed due to the antique market. The scientific community and some high-ranking officials understood the scale of the problem. But attempts to restrict the trade of antiquities constantly faced resistance from the state representing interests of the largest landowners, including the church. This research is the first generalizing work unfolding the problem of illegal excavations and trade of archaeological objects in Russian Empire in the second half of the XIX – first half of the XX centuries.
