"The Lion and the Unicorn" in the works of Russian folk art

Abstract

Образ "Льва и Единорога" можно встретить на многочисленных произведениях народного искусства. Он украшал фасады домов, пряничные доски, прялки и многое другое. Однако возникает вопрос, что же побудило народных мастеров воспроизводить в своём творчестве данный образ? Откуда они узнали о существовании подобных существ? И в результате чего сложилась определенная традиция изображения пары, стоящими друг напротив друга? В данной работе была предпринята попытка ответить на все вышестоящие вопросы и раскрыть историю проникновения и распространения образа "Льва и Единорога" в русском народном искусстве.

The image of the Lion and the Unicorn can be found in numerous works of russian folk art. It decorates the facades of wooden houses, gingerbread boards, spinning wheels and more. However, there is a question: what prompted the folk artists to reproduce it in their works? Where did they learn about the existence of such creatures? And how the tradition to portray these two beasts as standing opposite each other was created? The author of this work made an attempt to give an answer on all questions and reveal the history of penetration and extension of the image of the Lion and the Unicorn in russian folk art.
