The history and image of railways in Japanese society in the 20th and 21st centuries

Abstract

История железнодорожного транспорта в Японии довольно обширная и витиеватая. Современную Японию фактически невозможно представить без поездов не только с экономической, но и с социальной точки зрения. Первый железнодорожный участок появился в Японии ещё в 1872 году, и началось активное строительство новый линий, которые связывали разные части страны. Однако, расцвет железнодорожной отрасли пришёлся именно на ХХ–ХХI вв. Помимо экономического влияния на страну железные дороги стали менять и культурную среду в обществе. За одно столетие отношение к железным дорогам среди японцев поменялось, что находит своё отражение в искусстве, например, кинематографе, литературе.

The history of rail transport in Japan is quite extensive and florid. It is impossible to imagine modern Japan without trains, not only from an economic but also from a social point of view. The first railway section appeared in Japan back in 1872, and the state began active construction of new lines that connected different parts of the country. However, the flourishing of the railway industry fell on the XX – XXI centuries. In addition to the economic impact on the country, railways began to change the cultural environment in society. Over the course of a century, the attitude towards railways among the Japanese has changed, which is reflected in art, for example, cinema and literature.
