Political and social image of Russia in the US media space during D.Trump's presidency

Abstract

Цель данной работы состоит в том, чтобы дать характеристику образу России, сложившемуся после президентских выборов 2016 г. в США. В основе анализа исследуемого материала лежит метод контент-анализ. Для анализа были взяты следующие издания: «The New York Times», «Cable News Network-CNN», «Fox News Channel-Fox». Временной промежуток включает в себя период ноябрь 2016 год-март 2018 год. С помощью сравнения образа России в освещении американских СМИ до прихода к власти Д. Трампа и после удается проследить как меняется образ России, какие темы уходят с повестки дня, а какие выходят на первый план, а также в какой степени скандал оказал влияние на образ России в американском дискурсе.В ходе исследования образа России в американском медиадискурсе были выявлены наиболее часто упоминаемые темы общего характера: образ российского лидера, экономическая и военная мощь России, оценка российской угрозы. Данные сюжеты относятся к основным элементам, которые влияют на представление образа государства в зарубежной прессе. Подводя итоги, выдвигаемая гипотеза о значительном влиянии скандала, связанного с российским вмешательством, подтвердилась. Этот сюжет повлиял на представление образа России не просто в американском дискурсе, а, в целом, на межгосударственные отношения между США и Россией.

The purpose of this work is to characterize the image of Russia that has composed after the 2016 presidential election in the United States. The analysis of the material is based on the content analysis method. The following publications were taken for analysis: The New York Times, Cable News Network-CNN, Fox News Channel-Fox. The time period includes the period November 2016-March 2018. By comparing the image of Russia in the coverage of the American media before D. Trump came to power and after, it is possible to trace how the image of Russia is changing, which topics leave the agenda, and which come to the fore, and to what extent the scandal has influenced the image of Russia in American discourse. During the study of the image of Russia in the American media discourse, the most frequently mentioned topics of a general nature were identified: the image of the Russian leader, Russia's economic and military power , the assessment of the Russian threat. These plots refer to the main elements that influence the representation of the image of the state in the foreign press. Summing up, the hypothesis about the significant impact of the scandal associated with the Russian intervention was confirmed. This plot influenced the representation of the image of Russia not just in American discourse, but, in general, in interstate relations between the USA and Russia.
