The British exit from the European Union as a result of special position of the United Kihgdom in the process of European integration

Abstract

Евроскептицизм в Великобритании появился и развивался под воздействием множества факторов, связанных как с историческим прошлым страны, так и с особенностями британской национальной идентичности. В процессе европейской интеграции Соединённое Королевство всегда являлось и является до сих пор наиболее неоднозначным участником, ставящим свои национальные интересы выше интересов своих европейских партнёров. Все годы нахождения страны в составе европейского интеграционного объединения как в обществе, так и в кругах политической элиты никогда не прекращалась дискуссия о членстве страны в составе Сообщества. Данная ситуация нередко приводила к политическим кризисам в стране, так как даже внутри правящих партий никогда не было полноценного единства мнений касательно того, какое место Королевство должно занимать в евроинтеграционном процессе. Данная работа сконцентрирована на выявлении исторических и социальных причин особого положения Великобритании в процессе объединения Европы, приведших к решению страны в 2016 году покинуть Европейский Союз и на том, каким образом эти факторы повлияли на современные взаимоотношения Лондона и Брюсселя. При этом рассматриваются в первую очередь исторические события, во время которых развился британский евроскептицизм, а также возможное будущее Великобритании и Европейского Союза при окончательном выходе страны из состава ЕС.

British Euroscepticism appeared and developed under the influence of several factors related to both the historical past of the country and the peculiarities of British national identity. In the process of European integration, the United Kingdom has always been and is still the most controversial member, placing its national interests above the interests of its European partners. All the years that the country has been a part in the European integration process, both in society and in the circles of its political elite, the discussion about country's membership in the Community has never stopped. This situation often led to political crises in the country, as even within the ruling parties there was never a full-fledged consensus on what place the Kingdom should occupy in the European integration process. This work focuses on identifying the historical and social reasons for the special position of Great Britain in the process of European integration, which led to the country's decision to leave the European Union in 2016 and how these factors influenced modern relations between London and Brussels. At the same time, the work is focused on historical events during which British Euroscepticism developed, as well as on the possible future of Great Britain and the European Union after the final withdrawal of the country from the EU.
