The modern meaning of the words "South", "Southern", "Southerner", "southerness" as markers of identity: A case study of interviews of American politicians and workers of culture

Abstract

В настоящем исследовании анализируются слова “South”, “Southern”, “Southerner”, “southernness”, которые в текстах интервью с американскими политиками и деятелями культуры играют роль маркеров идентичности. Структура работы представлена введением, двумя главами, заключением, списками литературы, использованных словарей, источников литературы, заключением и приложением. Задача данного диссертационного исследования состоит в том, чтобы изучить, каким образом слова “South”, “Southern”, “Southerner”, “southernness” становятся маркерами идентичности в речи от первого лица, а также выявить механизмы, посредством которых данные маркеры идентичности используются для создания положительного образа политиков и деятелей культуры. Материалом исследования в настоящей работе являются тексты интервью с американскими политиками и деятелями культуры и контексты, отобранные из Корпуса современного английского языка (Corpus of Contemporary American English) и исторического корпуса американского английского языка (Corpus of Historical American English), а также толковые словари современного английского языка (The American Heritage Dictionary, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Longman Dictionary, Macmillan Dictionary). В первой главе рассматриваются основные подходы к пониманию идентичности, приводятся ключевые сведения по американской истории, которые повлияли на формирование южной региональной идентичности, а также рассматриваются основные особенности речевого жанра интервью. Во второй главе проводится анализ существующих словарных дефиниций слова “South” и контекстов, в которых употребляется слово “South” и его производные. На основании этого анализа предлагаются альтернативные определения данным словам. Кроме того, изучается процесс становления этих слов маркерами идентичности в текстах интервью. Результаты проведённого исследования показывают, что слова “South”, “Southern”, “Southerner”, “southernness” обладают развёрнутой структурой полисемии, которая не всегда адекватно представлена в современных толковых словарях. На основании анализа контекстов в рамках структуры полисемии данных лексем предлагается выделять два основных ЛСВ в зависимости от типа оценочной модуляции, отрицательной или положительной, существующей в тексте.

In the following research the author analyzes the words “South”, “Southern”, “Southerner”, “southernness” which function as identity markers in the interviews with American politicians and artists. The main aim of this research is to study how the above mentioned words become identity markers in interviewees’ answers and, also, to find out the mechanisms by means of which these markers are used for creating positive images of politicians and artists. Interviews with American politicians and artists, contexts from Corpus of Contemporary American English, Corpus of Historical American English and unilingual English Dictionaries (The American Heritage Dictionary, Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Longman Dictionary, Macmillan Dictionary) are used as data for this research. In chapter 1, the author considers the main approaches to understanding identity; focuses on the episodes of the American history which had a great impact on the Southern identity and, also, points at the key characteristics of interview as a speech genre. In chapter 2, the author analyzes the existing dictionary definitions of the word “South” and the contexts in which the word “South” and its derivatives are used. On the ground of this analysis, experimental dictionary entries for the above mentioned words are offered. The author, also, studies how these words become identity markers in interviews. The results of the research demonstrate that the words “South”, “Southern”, “Southerner”, “southernness” have an expanded structure of polysemy and dictionaries do not always present it adequately. On the ground of the context analysis the author offers to distinguish 2 senses for each word depending on the type of evaluativity (negative or positive) found in texts.
