Ways of paraphrasing death in Japanese and English and their perception by native speakers

Abstract

В работе рассмотрены перифразы, используемые при описании смерти в английском и японском языках и их восприятие. Образ смерти и его восприятие постоянно меняются с течением времени, в том числе в результате развития медицины, изменения традиционных ритуалов и расширения связей между частной и общественной жизнью. Эти изменения проявляются в языковой реализации образа смерти, а именно в выражениях, используемых для непрямого называния, т.е. перифразирования. Целью настоящей работы является определение того, какие способы перифразирования называния смерти употребляются носителями японского языка и носителями английского языка в настоящее время, а какие перифразы, указанные в словарях теряют свою актуальность и выходят из употребления. В основе анализа лежат результаты эксперимента, проведенного в форме опроса носителей английского и японского языков. Результаты анализа показали, что несмотря на то, что в целом в обоих языках существует значительное число выражений, эвфемистически передающих значение «смерти», носители английского языка используют в своей речи большее разнообразие перифраз, чем носители японского языка. В то же время носители обоих языков часто допускают в речи прямое называние смерти. С точки зрения восприятия предложенных в опросе перифраз анализ показал, что самыми частотными и нейтральными для носителей английского языка являются выражения to perish и to pass away, а для носителей японского языка – 亡くなる и 逝去, которые можно считать прототипическими для всего набора перифраз, передающих образ смерти, для каждого из языков.

The thesis discusses the periphrases used to describe death in English and Japanese and their perception. The image of death and its perceptions are constantly changing over time, due to the development of medicine, changes in traditional rituals and the expansion of interconnections between private and public life. These changes are manifested in the linguistic realization of the image of death, namely in the expressions used for indirect naming, i.e. in paraphrasing. The aim of the thesis is to determine which methods of death paraphrasing are used by native Japanese and native English speakers at the present time, and which paraphrases indicated in dictionaries have lost their relevance and have gone out of use. The analysis is based on the results of an experiment conducted in the form of a survey of native speakers of English and Japanese. The results of the analysis showed that despite the fact that in general ​​there is a significant number of expressions euphemistically conveying the meaning of "death" in both languages, native English speakers use a greater variety of paraphrases in their speech than the speakers of Japanese. At the same time, speakers of both languages ​​often use the direct name of death in their speech. Regarding the perception of the paraphrases discussed in the survey, the analysis showed that the most common and neutral expressions for English speakers are to perish and to pass away, and for Japanese speakers - 亡 く な る and 逝去, which can be considered prototypical for the entire set of periphrases that convey the image of death, for each language.
