Representation of the problem of divorce in modern American TV series

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационная работа посвящена исследованию репрезентации проблемы разводов в современных американских сериалах. Актуальность работы обусловлена преобладанием визуальной информации в современном мире и ценностью визуальных документов как источников социологических данных. В фокусе внимания исследования актуальные смыслы, которыми наделяется проблема развода в современных американских сериалах. В теоретико-методологической части работы рассмотрена история становления визуальных исследований, обоснован потенциал сериалов как источника социологических данных и раскрыты изменения в представлениях о разводе в современном мире. В работе также представлен исторический обзор репрезентации брачно-семейных отношений в американских сериалах (1950 – наст.вр.). Эмпирическое исследование посвящено анализу репрезентации проблемы развода в современных американских сериалах на примере телевизионных проектов: «Любовники» (2014-2019) и «Развод» (2016-2019). В результате исследования установлено, что развод в сериалах представлен в качестве противоречивого периода в жизни супругов. С одной стороны, значительное внимание в сюжетах уделяется несовершенству юридических инстанций в урегулировании конфликтов при разводе. С другой стороны, прослеживается тенденция к пересмотру развода как исключительно негативного события. Отмечаются особенности репрезентации развода супругов с общими детьми как этапа становления новой формы семейных отношений. Настоящее исследование можно расценивать как первый шаг на пути к более глубокому рассмотрению проблематики разводов в аудиовизуальных источниках. Кроме того, оно демонстрирует, что сериалы выступают важным и перспективным источником социологически релевантной информации об актуальных социальных изменениях.

The graduation qualifying work is devoted to the study of the representation of the problem of divorce in modern American TV series. The relevance of the work is due to the predominance of visual information in the modern world and the value of visual documents as sources of sociological data. The focus of the research is on the actual meanings that are given to the problem of divorce in modern American TV series. In the theoretical and methodological part of the work, the history of the formation of visual research is considered, the potential of TV series as a source of sociological data is justified, and changes in the ideas about divorce in the modern world are revealed. The paper also presents a historical overview of the representation of marriage and family relations in American TV series (1950-present). The empirical study is devoted to the analysis of the representation of the problem of divorce in modern American TV series on the example of television projects: «The affair» (2014-2019) and «Divorce» (2016-2019). As a result of the study, it was found that divorce in the TV series is presented as a controversial period in the life of the spouses. On the one hand, considerable attention in the stories is paid to the imperfection of legal authorities in the settlement of conflicts in divorce. On the other hand, there is a tendency to reconsider divorce as an exclusively negative event. The peculiarities of the representation of the divorce of spouses with common children as a stage in the formation of a new form of family relations are noted. This study can be regarded as a first step towards a more in-depth consideration of the issue of divorce in audiovisual sources. In addition, it demonstrates that TV series are an important and promising source of sociologically relevant information about current social changes.
