The Ural Industrial Biennal of Contemporary Art as a Form of Updating the Constructivist Heritage in Yekaterinburg

Abstract

В выпускной квалификационной работе на основе анализа проектов Уральской индустриальной биеннале современного искусства и её влияния на культурную инфраструктуру Екатеринбурга рассматривается процесс развития темы конструктивистского наследия города в период с 2010 по 2020 годы. Предмет исследования - процесс актуализации наследия конструктивизма Екатеринбурга в рамах проектов Уральской индустриальной биеннале. Цель исследования - выявить степень влияния Уральской индустриальной биеннале на процесс актуализации наследия конструктивизма Екатеринбурга. Работа состоит из введения, трёх глав, заключения и библиографического списка. В первой главе подробно анализируется историография по трём аспектам темы: архитектура конструктивизма Екатеринбурга; термин «актуализация»; биеннале как выставочный формат. Во второй главе выявляется предпосылка появления Уральской индустриальной биеннале современного искусства, лежащая в необходимости работы с идентичностью, формирующей имидж Екатеринбурга, который переживает кризис глобальной перестройки индустриальной экономики в инновационную. Во второй главе также формулируется термин биеннале, его характерные черты и в частности успешные модели работы Уральской индустриальной биеннале в рамках формата, которые позволили стать событию ярким примером в международном биеннальном движении. Третья глава посвящена Уральской индустриальной биеннале как форме актуализации наследия конструктивизма Екатеринбурга. Через анализ проектов, затрагивающих тему архитектуры конструктивизма первых трёх редакций биеннале выявлено, что событие активизирует ценность памятников конструктивизма следующими путями: а) ставит памятники конструктивизма в ряд мировых шедевров архитектуры за счет исторической связи с идеями школы Баухаус и европейским функционализмом; б) формирует новый язык «социальной» истории конструктивизма; в) становится драйвером развития темы конструктивизма, импульсы от которого распространяются на сеть культурных институций города. В этой же главе приводится мировой опыт сохранения архитектурного наследия модернизма, приводятся эффективные методы реставрации зданий конструктивизма, развенчиваются мифы об архитектуре данного стиля. Перспективы развития практического сохранения конструктивизма Екатеринбурга видятся в дальнейшей работе по включению памятников в номинацию на включение в Список всемирного наследия ЮНЕСКО.

Based on the analysis of the projects of the Ural industrial Biennale of contemporary art and its impact on the cultural infrastructure of Yekaterinburg, the final qualifying work examines the development of the theme of the constructivist heritage of the city in the period from 2010 to 2020. The subject of the research is the process of updating the constructivist heritage of Yekaterinburg in the framework of the Ural industrial Biennale projects. The purpose of the research is to reveal the degree of influence of the Ural industrial Biennale on the process of updating the constructivist heritage of Yekaterinburg. The work consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusion,and bibliography. In the first Chapter, the historiography is analyzed in detail on three aspects of the topic: the architecture of constructivism in Yekaterinburg; the term "actualization"; and the Biennale as an exhibition format. The second Chapter reveals the background for the appearance of the Ural industrial Biennale of modern art, which lies in the need to work with the identity that forms the image of Yekaterinburg, which is experiencing a crisis of global restructuring of the industrial economy into an innovative one. In the second Chapter, the term "Biennale" is also formulated, its characteristic features and in particular the successful models of the Ural industrial Biennale within the framework of the format, which allowed the event to become a shining example in the international biennial movement. The third Chapter is devoted to the Ural industrial Biennale as a form of updating the constructivist heritage of Yekaterinburg. Through the analysis of projects that touch on the theme of constructivist architecture in the first three editions of the Biennale, it is revealed that the event activates the value of constructivist monuments in the following ways: a) places constructivist monuments among the world's masterpieces of architecture due to the historical connection with the ideas of the Bauhaus school and European functionalism; b) forms a new language of the "social" history of constructivism; C) becomes a driver of the development of the theme of constructivism, the impulses from which extend to the network of cultural institutions of the city. In the same Chapter, the world experience of preserving the architectural heritage of modernism is given, effective methods of restoration of constructivist buildings are given, and myths about the architecture of this style are debunked. Prospects for the development of practical preservation of constructivism in Yekaterinburg are seen in further work on the inclusion of monuments in the nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO world heritage List.
