The mechanisms of the Lofoten Vortex formation according to the satellite, field measurements and modelling data

Abstract

В данной работе рассматриваются основные механизмы формирования квазипостоянного Лофотенского вихря. На основе данных реанализа GLORYS12V1 за период 1993-2018 гг. проанализирована сезонная и межгодовая изменчивость глубины верхнего квазиоднородного слоя (ВКС) в зимне-весенний период в Лофотенской котловине. С помощью среднемесячных карт за период декабрь-апрель дана оценка пространственного распределения глубин ВКС. Для расчета глубины ВКС применяются два независимых метода: Кара и Монтегута. С помощью численных экспериментов и натурных данных проанализировано влияние топографии морского дна на распределение вихревой и кинетической энергии в Норвежском море.

Basic mechanisms of the formation of the quasi-permanent Lofoten Vortex are considered in this research. The seasonal and interannual variability of the Mixed Layer Depth (MLD) is analyzed based on the GLORYS12V1 reanalysis data for the period from 1993 to 2018. The spatial distribution of the MLD is analyzed using the monthly average maps from December to April. Two independent methods provided by Kara and Montegut are applied to estimate the MLD in the Lofoten Basin. The influence of the topography on eddy and kinetic energy in the Norwegian Sea is analyzed based on numerical experiments and in situ data.
