Issues of Textology in the Translator's Work: Evidence from Fedor Stepun’s в “Mystische Weltschau”

Abstract

The phenomenon of intertextuality is studied, with evidence taken from the books by Fedor Stepun: Mystische Weltschau. Fünf Gestalten des russischen Symbolismus (Carl Hanser Verlag: München, 1964 . - 442 S.) and Misticheskoje mirovidenije. Pjat’ obrazov russkogo simvolizma (translated from German by G. Snezhinskaya, E. Krepak, L. Markevich. SPb . "Vladimir Dal', 2013 . - 479 p.). A detailed study is provided of various types of citations in the German text created by a Russian author and addressed to German-speaking recipients containing numerous quotations from the works of Russian prose, poetry and philosophy. Typical cases of cited modifications are analyzed; the dependence of transformations of cited text fragments from the author's intention for communicating information to the German reader is traced. The article analyzes and shows specific strategies applied by the Russian translators of the book and takes into account the importance of the competence of Russian-language recipients.
