Traditions of classical anti-utopia in Finnish fiction: A case study of Emmi Itäranta’ works

Abstract

В данной работе рассматривается сходство современной финской антиутопии с произведениями, созданными в рамках классической европейской традиции жанра. При сравнительном анализе романов Эмми Итяранта с классическими антиутопиями (романами Д. Оруэлла, О. Хаксли, Е. Замятина и др.) выявлены точки соприкосновения произведений финской писательницы с творчеством её предшественников, а также их новаторские особенности. Сравниваются следующие параметры: хронотоп произведения, изображённое в нём общество и художественная форма. На основе полученных данных делается вывод, что финская антиутопия унаследовала определённые формальные и содержательные черты классической антиутопии, но переосмыслила их по-своему.

This paper studies the similarities between the modern Finnish anti-utopia and the classical European anti-utopian tradition. The main method of this research is comparative analysis between the works by a contemporary Finnish author Emmi Itäranta and classical anti-utopias (such as those by J. Orwell, A. Huxley, E. Zamyatin etc) which reveals that there are some common traits but also that E. Itäranta’s understanding of the genre is new in some ways. Three aspects are compared: the relationship of time and space in the novel, the world that is described there and the formal characteristics of the text. Basing on the received data a conclusion was drawn that Finnish anti-utopia has inherited some traits from classical anti-utopias both in form and contents but has interpreted them in its own way.
