Adverbial modification of prepositional phrases in Russian

Abstract

Целью исследования является описание вариативности порядка слов при адвербиальной модификации ПГ в русском языке (например, «в очень хорошем состоянии / очень в хорошем состоянии») и выработка предпосылок для будущего формального описания этой вариативности, создающей проблему для семантических теорий, исходящих из единства семантики предлога и наречия во всех употреблениях. Используя данные НКРЯ, мы описываем соотношение порядков слов в зависимости от различных просодических, лексических и морфосинтаксических характеристик предлога, наречия и именной группы. Эти данные помещаются в контекст современных дискуссий о семантике предлогов и о статусе «функциональных» единиц в синтаксисе.

The paper aims at the description of the word order variation in Russian prepositional phrases, where an adverb modifying an adjective within the PP may precede the whole PP or be put after the preposition, and lays ground for a future interpretation of the variation in formal terms. So far understudied, the variation presents a problem for a unified semantic treatment of an adverb (and a preposition) in all its uses. Using data drawn from the Russian National Corpus, I describe how the word order varies depending on different prosodic, lexical and morphosyntactic features of prepositions, adverbs and noun phrases involved. The results are put into the context of ongoing discussions concerning the semantics of prepositions and the status of "functional" elements in syntax.
