The culture of teaching and everyday life in the Tendai school of 9th-14th century Japan

Abstract

Изучение деятельности религиозных объединений на Дальнем Востоке в период до Нового времени производилось со множества позиций: социально-политической, философско-доктринальной, с точки зрения на эти объединения как на источник объектов материального и нематериального культурного наследия. Аналогично данным основным направлениям исследования выбирались и объекты исследования: источники по политической истории, памятники философской мысли, литературные памятники, а также предметы декоративно-прикладного искусства, архитектура и другие конкретные проявления эстетического сознания. Внимание обращает на себя некоторая нехватка внимания к внутренним процессам религиозных общин и закономерностей их внутренней организации. Под этим понимаются внутренние «процессуальные» документы, в которых содержатся конкретные рекомендации, запреты и прочие нормы, благодаря которым общий замысел деятельности общины уясняется всеми её членами. Таким образом, предметом исследования являются культура повседневности и образовательная культура как способы поддержания заданного порядка взаимодействия общинников между собой и с внешним миром. Объектом исследования являются тексты дисциплинарного характера, составленные руководителями школы и представляющие видение ими основополагающих ценностей школы.

The thesis focuses upon the ways to structure the routine life, to train monks as scholars, ritual practitioners and lecturers on the scripture as seen in the Tendai school in Heian (794–1185) and Kamakura (794–1185) periods. The research goal is to examine the sets of rules that school leaders compiled over this extended period, especially the rules concerning discipline, interaction with the laymen and other issues beyond the realm of faith. Chapter 1 relays the history of establishing of the Tendai school and its way to become quite an independent entity in an environment of strict government control over Buddhist affairs, as well as its relationship with other schools and its court patrons. Chapter 2 takes a closer look on the evolution of the policies put in place by the school leadership over the years as the school amassed wealth, as the number of its monks grew and its intellectual influence spread over the country. The starting point for this thesis grew out of Neil McMullin’s article ‘Historical and historiographical issues in the study of pre-modern Japanese religions’ (Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, Vol 16:1 1989), out of my engagement with books by Mikael Adolphson (Adolphson, 2000; 2007). These works shed light on the issues largely ignored by researchers as the issues in question had somewhat of a fringe position in between the more traditional fields of history and religion studies. The first researcher to pay close attention to these issues was Kuroda Toshio (Kuroda, 1980). The seminal works mentioned above and this thesis to a certain extent employ the apparatus devised by Kuroda. The research portion of the thesis delves into the contents and argumentation of the rules that governed life in Tendai school as well as the historic background of the creation of said rules. In Saicho’s (767–822) case, I accessed rules attributed to him in the from of the Russian translation by Nadezhda Trubnikova (Saicho, 2006, 2008). Rules by Ryogen were accessed in the English translation and in the kambun original versions.
