The category of animacy in English-language fiction: Actualization means ad translatability

Abstract

В данной работе анализируется актуализация категории одушевленности и сопряженной с ней категории гендера в значении английских неодушевленных существительных на материале художественных произведений XX-XXI вв. Выделяются способы и средства актуализации данных категорий, анализируется относительная частотность их использования. Производится сопоставление авторских текстов и опубликованных переводов на русский язык с целью выявить спектр способов передачи актуализованных значений одушевленности и гендера при переводе, а также сделать вывод о переводческом потенциале способов и средств актуализации данных значений.

This study is devoted to analyzing the assignment of animacy and gender to inanimate nouns in English-language fiction written in the 20th and 21st centuries. It contains a description of different types and means of assigning these characteristics to inanimate nouns and an analysis of how often these types and means are used in proportion to each other. It also includes a comparative analysis of the original texts and their published translations into Russian which is aimed at revealing ways of rendering the assigned characteristics of animacy and gender in translation and making conclusions about the translatability of different assignment types and means.
