Representations of Holocaust through audiovisual comics form

Abstract

Работа посвящена анализу проблемы изображения и интерпретации события Холокоста в аудиовизуальной форме комикса. В первой части работы рассматривается проблема осмысления трагических исторических событий XX века в форме вербально-визуального повествования. Выделяются общие тенденции и анализируются некоторые особенности, присущие документальным и художественным «рассказам в картинках». Вторая часть посвящена вопросу репрезентации непосредственно Холокоста в комиксе. Рассматривается идея травмы и возможность перенесения памяти о травматическом опыте в изображение на примере анализа графических новелл Арта Шпигельмана, Мишеля Кичка, Джо Куберта и др. Третья часть содержит теоретический анализ структурных особенностей комикса, а также – ответ на вопрос, почему графический рассказ – это актуальный и релевантный медиум для изображения исторических катастроф.

This research is dedicated to analyzing the problems in the depiction and interpretation of the Holocaust through the audiovisual form of comics. The first part of this work investigates the problems in understanding the tragic historic events that occurred in XX century through the lens of graphic literature. The general tendency in history representation through comics is highlighted, and some specifics of documentary and fiction graphic novels on the topic are examined. The second part explores the issues in the representation of the tragic events through the perspective of audiovisual comics. The idea of trauma and the possible transference of some traumatic experiences into images is explored through the study of graphic novels (dedicated to pictorial interpretations of the Holocaust) by authors, such as Art Spiegelman, Michel Kichka, Joe Kubert and others. The third part contains the theoretical analysis of some structural features of comics as a form of visual art and gives the reasons, why graphic texts are the relevant media for the depiction of tragic historic events.
