Gesar Khan: A Mongolian cultural hero

Abstract

Магистерская диссертация посвящена исследованию Гэсэрa, главного героя монгольского эпоса «Гэсэриада». Целью работы является изучение Гэсэра как культурного героя монголов. В Главе 1 дается краткая характеристика «Гэсэриады»; мы рассматриваем некоторые вопросы изучения эпоса, а приводим список опубликованных и неопубликованных версий эпоса; отдельного внимания заслуживает сравнение истории изучения, структуры и содержания двух версий «Гэсэриады» – пекинского ксилографа на монгольском языке и рукописи Российской Национальной библиотеки (РНБ) на тибетском языке; мы также рассматриваем эволюцию эпоса под влиянием буддизма. В Главе 2 мы исследуем такие понятия, как «культурный герой», определяем основные функции и характеристики культурного героя в разных эпических системах, раскрываем значение терминов «трикстер» и «конкистадор», а также анализируем функции Гэсэра как культурного героя и воплощение представлений монголов (подразумеваются временные рамки составления монгольской версии эпоса, начало 18 века) об идеальном правителе. Теоретическую базу работы составляют исследования в области культурологии (в частности – на тему культурного героя) С. С. Березовской, Сун Гуйцзюань, Е. М. Мелетинского и других ученых. Историческая справка об исследовании «Гэсэриады» основывается на трудах Ц. Дамдинсурэна, С. А. Козина и др., а также на работах зарубежных ученых на английском (Thurston T.), китайском, тибетском и монгольском языках. Для практического исследования применялись тексты эпоса о Гэсэре – ксилографический на монгольском языке и дополнительно - рукописный на тибетском языке. Анализ доступных нам источников позволяет утверждать, что Гэсэр – это культурный герой эпоса, которому присущи качества и свойства культурных героев, как архаичного типа (трикстер), так и более позднего (конкистадор). Культурный герой монгольского эпоса «Гэсэриада» также является выражением представлений народа о качествах идеального правителя в указанный временной период.

This master's thesis is focused on the main character of an epic known as “The Epic of Gesar”. The aim of current research is to study Gesar of Mongolian version of the epic as a Mongolian cultural hero. In Chapter 1 we present a brief description of the epic, considering its history of research, and also list both published and unpublished versions of the epic; this chapter is also concentrated on comparison of two versions of the epic - the Beijing xylograph (in Mongolian ) and the manuscript of the Russian National Library (RNL) (in the Tibetan language): we focus on history of research of those versions, their structure and contents, in particular; we also investigate the topic of the development and change of the epic due to the influence of Buddhism. In Chapter 2 we discuss concepts such as "cultural hero", state the meaning of the following terms - "trickster" and "conquistador," and analyze the following functions of Gesar himself as a cultural hero and an ideal leader (at the time period of formation of the Mongolian version of the epic - the beginning of the 18th century). Theoretical part of the work is based on researches in the field of cultural studies (and particularly considering the topic of the cultural hero) held out by S. S. Berezovskaya, Song Guijuan, E. M. Meletinsky, etc. Any historical reference in the thesis is based on the works of Ts. Damdinsuren, S. A. Kozin, etc.; works of foreign scientists - in English (Thurston T.), Chinese, Tibetan and Mongolian – are taken into account as well. While we were working on the practical part of the thesis we used and applied authentic materials – xylographic version of the epic in Mongolian and, in addition, the manuscript in Tibetan. The analysis of available sources allows us to state that Gesar is a cultural hero of the Mongolian epic, possessing the qualities and properties of cultural heroes, both of archaic type (trickster) and of that formed later (conquistador). According to the sources the cultural hero of the Mongolian epic "Gesar" is also an embodiment of an ideal leader for he represents people's ideas about the qualities of an ideal ruler at the time period.
