Corporate social performance in the strategy of international oil and gas companies operating on Sakhalin Island

Abstract

Цель данной работы состояла в том, чтобы определить особенности связи корпоративной социальной деятельности со стратегией нефтегазовых компаний «Сахалин Энерджи» и «Эксон Нефтегаз Лимитед Сахалин ЗАО», выполняющих свою деятельность на о. Сахалин. Данная работа также ставит основной задачей выявить основные характеристики КСД рассматриваемых компаний и сравнить их; после чего определить, в какой степени данные различия связаны со стратегиями компаний. Выпускной проект представляет собой эмпирическое исследование и рассматривает, по сути своей, уникальный случай: две лидирующие нефтегазовые компании, оперирующие на одной территории в рамках Соглашений о разделе продукции (документ, подписанный государством и данными компаниями в 1990-х и запрограммировавший деятельность последних на 30 лет), имеющие сходную технологическую цепочку добычи и обработки нефти и природного газа, предпочитают вести свою КСД по-разному, однако, при этом не теряют высоких позиций на рынке. В данной работе исследован теоретический фундамент, основывающийся на работе таких авторов, как Портер и Креймер, Бурк и Логсдон, Задек и пр., так или иначе связанные с ролью КСД в стратегии международных компаний. В ходе работы были достигнуты основные результаты – перечень выводов относительно причин и особенностей связи КСД рассматриваемых компаний в рамках стратегий их деятельности на о. Сахалин.

The main purpose of this final graduation thesis was to identify the peculiarities of a connection of corporate social performance with a strategy of international oil and gas companies “Sakhalin Energy” and “Exxon Neftegaz”, operating on Sakhalin island, Russia. This thesis also assigns the main objective to identify the key characteristics of the CSP of mentioned companies and compare them; thereafter to identify to what extent the figured differences are bounded to the companies’ strategy. The final thesis features an empirical research and observes, in substance, a unique case, where the leading oil and gas companies, operating on the same territory within the Product Sharing Agreement (a special document that was signed by the mentioned companies and the Russian government back in the 1990s and preplanned the companies’ activity on the island for the upcoming 30 years), having an identical technological chain of crude oil and gas extraction and processing, prefer to maintain their CSP in differently at the same time not losing their strong position on the market. This thesis investigates a theoretical framework, relying on the works of such authors, as Porter and Kramer, Burke and Logsdon, Zadek, etc., one way or another connected to the role of the CSR in the strategy of international companies. In the course of the work some of sufficient results have been achieved – a lost of outputs, explaining the reasons and peculiarities of the connection of the CSP of the reviewed companies within their strategy on Sakhalin island.
