Peacekeeping function of mass media: A case study of the Ukraine events from 2013 to 2016

Abstract

На данный момент все крупные СМИ так или иначе участвуют в освещение знаковых политических событий, среди которых возникающие вооруженные конфликты. Украинский кризис является одним из важнейших и масштабных примеров вооружено-политического противостояния.В связи с этим, журналистика может оказать значимое влияние на восприятие ситуации среди потребителей контента определенных СМИ, и, как следствие, на возможные действия членов социума. Актуальность темы исследования обусловлена рядом факторов, к которым, во-первых, относится увеличения текстов военной журналистики, связанное с наличием постоянного военного дискурса в современном медийном пространстве; во-вторых, осознание в научной среде влияния журналистики на массовую аудиторию; в-третьих, изучение функционального диапазона СМИ обеспечивает оптимизацию работы журналистов, а также успешность коммуникации между обществом и СМИ. Объект исследования: Военная журналистика России и Украины, посвящённая событиям на Украине 2013 – 2016 годов (на примере публикаций российский и украинских онлайн изданий «РБК», «Lenta.ru» и «Gazeta.ru», «Сегодня», «ТСН», «Обозреватель»). Предмет: контент военных СМИ как подтверждения или опровержения наличия в журналистике миротворческой функции. Цель работы: выявить возможности воздействия СМИ на предотвращение вооруженных конфликтов и их прекращение. Для достижения поставленной цели были обозначены следующие задачи: 1. проанализировать конструктивные возможности функций СМИ; 2. дать характеристику роли массмедийных средств в урегулировании вооруженных конфликтов; 3. рассмотреть сущность миротворческой функции журналистики, определив ее понятие; 4. доказать или опровергнуть наличие миротворческой функции военной журналистики; 5. выявить проявление миротворческой функции военной журналистики в вооруженном конфликте в Украине (2013-2016 гг.) Для решения поставленных задач использовались общенаучные методы исследования: сравнительный анализ, индукция, дедукция, стилистический анализ и контент-анализ. Хронологические рамки исследования: 7 апреля 2014 – 7 мая 2016 гг. Структура работы. Исследование состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка использованной литературы и приложений. В первой главе рассматривается понятийный аппарат и определяются функциональные особенности военной журналистики и ее роли в современном мире. Вторая глава посвящена контент-анализу современного военного медиарынка России и Украины.

At the moment, all the major media in one way or another feel in the coverage of important political events, among which are emerging armed conflicts. The Ukrainian crisis is one of the most important and large-scale examples of the armed-political confrontation, which led to drastic changes in the political and geographical structure of the whole world, which affected the lives of citizens of different countries (Ukraine, Russia, EU countries and NATO countries). In this regard, journalism can have a significant impact on the perception of the situation among consumers of certain media content, and, as a consequence, on possible actions of members of the society. The relevance of the research topic is conditioned by a number of factors, to which, firstly, the increase in the texts of military journalism is associated with the existence of a permanent military discourse in the modern media space; Secondly, the awareness in the scientific environment of the influence of journalism on the mass audience; Third, the study of the functional range of the media ensures the optimization of the work of journalists, as well as the success of communication between the society and the media. In accordance with the ongoing armed clashes and a changing political situation, the media is forming an agenda. In conjunction with the rapid development of information infrastructure, the media become the dominant mode of interaction within the society, as well as the main channel for individuals to acquire knowledge about the world around them. In consequence of these factors, it is important to determine the role of military journalists and their influence on the settlement of conflict situations and the maintenance of political stability. Object of the study: military journalism of Russia and Ukraine, dedicated to the events in Ukraine in 2013-2016 (for example, the publications of Russian and Ukrainian online publications RBC, Lenta.ru and Gazeta.ru, Today, TSN, "Reviewer"). Subject: the content of military media as a confirmation or refutation of the presence in journalism of a peacekeeping function. The purpose of the work: to identify the possibilities of the media influence on the prevention of armed conflicts and their cessation. To achieve this goal, the following tasks were identified: 1. analyze the constructive capabilities of media functions; 2. to characterize the role of mass media in resolving armed conflicts; 3. consider the essence of the peacekeeping function of journalism, defining its concept; 4. To prove or refute the existence of the peacekeeping function of military journalism; 5. To reveal the manifestation of the peacekeeping function of military journalism in the armed conflict in Ukraine (2013-2016). To solve the tasks set, general scientific methods of research were used: comparative analysis, induction, deduction, stylistic analysis and content analysis. Chronological framework of the study: 2013 - 2016. Structure of the work. The study consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, a list of references and applications. In the first chapter, the conceptual apparatus is examined and the functional features of military journalism and its role in the modern world are determined. The second chapter is devoted to the content analysis of the modern military media market of Russia and Ukraine.
