Brexit: Coverage in the British press

Кафедра международной журналистики Очная форма обучения Евроскептические настроения британского населения — вопрос, уходящий вглубь истории, но получающий новый виток развития прямо у нас на глазах. Итоги национального референдума 2016 года в Великобритании показали, что сегодня Соединенное Королевство готово решиться на ответственный шаг: окончательно выйти из крупнейшей политико-экономической организаци — Европейского Союза, членом которого страна являлась 44 года. В связи с этим, важно оценить, как распределились политические пристрастия британской прессы накануне Brexit. Эти знания помогут научному сообществу в дальнейшем прогнозировать поведение крупнейших таблоидов и качественных изданий. Из этого вытекает актуальность выпускной квалификационной работы. Цель исследования заключается в выявлении роли британской прессы относительно Brexit. Для достижения цели мы определили набор следующих задач: - изучить политическое явление ретроспективно, а именно — кратко представить исторический путь вступления Великобритании в Евросоюз, проследить реакции британской прессы на попытки вступления страны в ЕС, выявить историческое отношение таблоидной и «качественной» прессы к членству Британии в Евросоюзе; - проанализировать крупнейшие британские таблоиды на предмет их лояльности к Brexit сквозь призму поддержания СМИ национальной идентичности британцев; выявить основные аргументы массовой прессы в пользу своей точки зрения; - проанализировать крупнейшие британские качественные издания, выявить их позицию к выходу Британии из Евросоюза, обозначить основные доводы широкополосников по поводу изучаемого вопроса; - изучить отношение региональных изданий к Brexit. Объектом выпускной квалификационной работы является британская пресса. Предметом исследования являются особенности освещения Brexit в британской прессе. Теоретико-методическую базу составили труды отечественных и зарубежных историков М. В. Кирчанова, С. В. Кортунова, М. А. Липкина, А. А. Поляковой, С. Дженкинса, Ф. Белла. Также мы опирались на исследования социолога З. Баумана. Важными для нас оказались и научные статьи петербургского теоретика журналистики С. С. Бодруновой. В качестве основных методов исследования были использованы дискурс-анализ, сравнение, метод компиляции. Эмпирической базой стали online-версии британских СМИ. Это таблоиды «The Sun», «The Daily Mail», «The Daily Mirror» и качественные издания «The Times», «The Guardian», «The Daily Telegraph». Хронологические рамки исследования охватывают период с января 2016 года по апрель 2017 года, то есть накануне референдума и после него. Структура работы обусловлена целями и задачами и состоит из введения, двух глав, заключения, списка использованной литературы.

Department of International Journalism Intramural form of study Eurosceptical mood of the British is a historical question that is getting a new whorl right before our eyes. The results of the national referendum 2016 in Great Britain show that now the United Kingdom is ready to go the length of the crucial point: to withdraw definitively from the largest political-economic organization, the European Union, of which the country was a member of 44 years. In this regard, it is important to assess the political preferences of the British press on the eve of Brexit. This knowledge will help the scientific community to predict in prospect the behaviour of major tabloids and the quality papers. The timeliness of the graduation thesis follows thence. The purpose of the study is to identify the role of the British press in relation to Brexit. To achieve our goal, we determined the following tasks: - to look into the matter of the political phenomenon retrospectively, namely, to present briefly the way of Britain's accession to the European Union, to retrace responses of the British press to attempts of the country to access to the EU, to educe historical relation of the tabloid and "quality" papers to Britain's EU membership; - to analyze the major British tabloids concerning their loyalty to Brexit through the prism of maintenance of the national identity of the British; to educe the main arguments of the mass press in favour of its point of view; - analyze the major British quality paper periodical, to educe its attitude to the Brexit, to indicate the main arguments of broad-sheets on the subject of the point; - to look into the matter of the attitude of regional periodical to the Brexit. The British press is the target of the graduate qualification work. The Brexit coverage in the British press is the subject for study. Theoretical and procedural framework is formed with works of Russian and foreign historians M.V. Kirchanov, S.V. Kortunov, M.A. Lipkin, A. A. Polyakova, S. Jenkins, F. Bell. We also relied on the studies of sociologist Z. Bauman. The scientific articles of Saint-Petersburg journalism theorist, C. C. Bodrunova, were also important to us. The main methods of the study were discourse analysis, comparison, compilation method. The online versions of British media became the empirical base. These are tabloids «The Sun», «The Daily Mail», «The Daily Mirror» and quality papers «The Times», «The Guardian», «The Daily Telegraph». Chronological framework covers the period from January 2016 to April 2017, the day before and after the referendum. The structure of the work is based on goals and tasks and consists of an introduction, two chapters, a conclusion, and list of literature references.
