Sculpture parks in contemporary China: the problems of originality and the prospects for evolution

Abstract

Aspects of evolution and the current state of Chinese sculpture parks in the context of the latest trends in the interaction of sculpture and landscape are examined in the present article. Characteristics of the phenomenon of a specialized landscape complex for the permanent display of works by contemporary sculptors are presented. Characteristics of the relationship of sculptural parks with temporary exhibitions of sculpture in the open air are defined. Here is also examined the principle stages of how development of parks of modern sculpture in China are allocated. The structure and composition of the International Sculpture Park (Shijingshan, Beijing), Changchun World Sculpture Park, Yuzi Paradise Sculpture Park (Guangxi, Guilin), Deyang Stone Sculpture Park, Guangzhou Sculpture Park are analyzed. When compared with foreign examples, the strengths and weaknesses of Chinese parks of modern sculpture are identified.
