Images of St. Alexander Nevsky painted by I. N. Kramskoy for the Orthodox church in Copenhagen

Abstract

The article is devoted to two little-known paintings of I. N. Kramskoy on themes from the life of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky, executed for the Russian church in Copenhagen. The circumstances of the appearance of this commission from Yu. S. Nechaev-Maltsov and A. P. Bogolyubov’s role in this case are considered, and the timeframe for completion of the paintings is established. The subjects of the paintings are connected with the corresponding fragments of “The Life of St. Alexander Nevsky” from the Synodal collection. The compositional-pictorial construction of paintings is analyzed in the context of the general pictorial program of the church based on the author’s field research in Denmark in 2016. Refs 8. Figs 9.
