The life and works of Sappho: "Women's" poetry in the sociocultural history of archaic Greece

Abstract

Выпускная квалификационная работа, выполненная на кафедре истории Древней Греции и Рима, посвящена изучению жизни и творчества лесбосской аристократки Сапфо в контексте социокультурной истории Лесбоса. Источниковую базу исследования составляют фрагменты архаических поэтов (самой Сапфо и её современника Алкея), а также труды древнегреческого историка Геродота, римских писателей Элиана и Овидия и др. Работа состоит из трех глав: первая глава посвящена биографии Сапфо и особенностям общественного развития архаического Лесбоса; во второй главе рассматривается характер и функции женского сообщества, которым руководила Сапфо, а также её отношения с известными земляками-современниками; в третьей главе анализируется тематика творчества поэтессы и связь Сапфо с европейской литературой.

This graduation paper on the history of Ancient Greece and Rome for the bachelor’s degree deals with the life and legacy of lesbian aristocrat Sappho in the context of sociocultural history of the island. The main sources of the research are the fragments of the archaic poets (Sappho and Alkaios) and the works of the Greek historian Herodotus, the Roman writers Elian and Ovid, etc. The paper consists of three chapters: the first one contains the Sappho’s biography and particularities of social development of archaic Lesbos; the second chapter discusses the nature and functions of the female community, which was led by Sappho, and her relationships with the famous countrymen-contemporaries; the third chapter analyses the themes of poetess's creative work and the connection between Sappho and European writers.
