Orthodox mission in the Russian North and the Kazan Volga Region (14th – 16th centuries)

Abstract

Научная работа посвящена одной из страниц истории миссионерства на Русском Севере и в Казанском Поволжье. Рассмотрена деятельность первых православных миссионеров на данной территории в контексте истории христианского просвещения нерусских народов, в частности, коми, саамов, татар. Изучены условия и особенности распространения христианства среди местного населения. Проанализированы источники и обширная историография по данной тематике. Автор уделяет внимание начальному этапу православной проповеди (XIV-XVI вв.). Он относит миссионерство к числу важных факторов конфессиональной политики на Русском Севере и в Казанском Поволжье. Автор делает следующие выводы: 1) расширение территории Российского государства и включение в его орбиту народов происходило во многом посредством религиозной консолидации, при попытке создания некоего единого культурного и духовного пространства; 2) северная православная проповедь имела ряд важных отличий от проповеди в казанском регионе; 3) значительную роль в распространении новой веры в регионе играла монастырская колонизация, перевод богослужения и богослужебных книг на местные языки (в некоторых случаях – создание письменности), рукоположение местного священства; 4) в отличие от северной миссии среди язычников, православная проповедь в Казани не привела к столь успешным результатам, что во многом объясняется характером самого ислама как четко оформленного монотеистического учения, а также иными подходами миссионеров.

The research is devoted to one of the pages of the history of missionary work in the Russian North and the Kazan Volga region. The activity of the first Orthodox missionaries in this territory is considered in the context of the history of Christian enlightenment of non-Russian peoples, in particular, the Komi, the Saami, and the Tatars. The author explores of the conditions and characteristics of the spread of Christianity among the local population. He also analyzes sources and extensive historiography on this topic. Attention is drawn to the initial stage of Orthodox preaching (XIV-XVI centuries). He attributes missionary work to a number of important factors of confessional politics in the Russian North and the Kazan Volga region. The author makes the following conclusions: 1) the expansion of Russia's territory and the inclusion of peoples in this orbit occurred through religious consolidation with the attempt to create a single cultural and spiritual space; 2) the northern Orthodox sermon had a number of important differences from the sermon in the Kazan region; 3) a significant role in the spread of a new faith in the region was played by monastic colonization, the translation of liturgy and liturgical books into local languages (in some cases, creation of writing), the ordination of the local priesthood; 4) unlike the northern mission among the pagans, the Orthodox sermon in Kazan did not lead to such successful results. It is largely due to the nature of Islam as a clearly defined monotheistic dogma, as well as other approaches of missionaries.
