Translation of English-language literature into Russian during the "new period" as illustrated by Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre"

Abstract

Реферируемое исследование посвящено выявлению особенностей перевода англоязычной литературы на русский язык в период «нового времени» (на материале романа Ш. Бронте «Джейн Эйр»). Страсть ко всему английскому стала яркой чертой культурного развития России конца 1830-х – начала 1840-х гг., но именно литература служила прочным мостом между Англией и Россией и способствовала формированию и развитию переводоведения. Материалом исследования послужили роман Ш. Бронте «Джен Эйр» (1848 г.) и перевод И. И. Введенского «Дженни Эйр» (1849 г.). В результате исследования выявляется личность переводчика И.И. Введенского. Анализ материала показал, что, пропуская некоторые моменты в переводе романа, увеличивая экспрессивность путем добавления определенных языковых единиц, И.И. Введенский выражает собственное мнение, отличное от точки зрения автора. Кроме того, местами он не перевел роман Ш. Бронте, а пересказал его. Таким образом, перевод художественного текста позволил проследить за тем, как мысли автора Ш. Бронте и переводчика И.И. Введенского противопоставляются в рамках одного утверждения. В переводе романа «Джейн Эйр», осуществленном русским педагогом, переводчиком, историком литературы, обнаруживаются «следы» языковой личности, которая является национально-культурным прототипом носителя определенного языка. Материалы и результаты исследования могут быть использованы в курсах по лингвокультурологии и теории перевода.

The given study is dedicated to the identification of the specific features of translating English-language literature into Russian during the «new period» (based on the novel by Ch. Bronte «Jane Eyre»). The passion for everything English became a bright feature of the cultural development of Russia in the late 1830s and early 1840s, but only literature was a solid bridge between England and Russia and it contributed to the formation and development of translation theory. The material of the research is the novel by Ch. Bronte «Jane Eyre» (1848) and the translation of I. I. Vvedensky «Jenny Eyre» (1849). As a result of the study the personality of the translator I. I. Vvedensky is identified. The analysis of the material showed that missing out some moments in the translation of the novel, increasing expressivity by adding certain linguistic units, I. I. Vvedensky expresses his own opinion that is different from the author's point of view. Besides, in some parts he did not translate the novel by Ch. Bronte, but retold it. Thus, the translation of the artistic text allowed us to watch how the thoughts of the author Ch. Bronte and the translator I. I. Vvedensky are opposed to each other in the framework of one statement. «Traces» of a linguistic personality, which is a national-cultural prototype of a carrier of a certain language, are revealed in the translation of the novel «Jane Eyre» that was implemented by a Russian teacher, translator, and historian of literature. The materials and results of the study can be used in courses on cultural linguistics and translation theory.
