Changes in the exhibitions of the Russian Museum of Ethnography in the context of the social and cultural transformations in Russia in the 20th – 21st centuries

Abstract

Целью выпускной квалификационной работы является изучение изменения экспозиции Российского этнографического музея в условиях социально-культурных трансформаций России. В качестве объекта исследования выступает экспозиция музея, а предмета – процесс её трансформаций в зависимости от социально-культурных изменений в стране. Основными хронологическими рамками исследования является период с 1923 по 2012 гг., начиная с открытия первой экспозиции для посетителей и заканчивая одной из последних экспозиций в залах Средней Азии и Южного Кавказа. Работа выполнена на девяноста пяти страницах, состоит из введения, трех глав и списка источников и литературы. Первая глава посвящена дореволюционному периоду: история строительства здания музея, архитектурное решение и его влияние на музейное пространство, первое оборудование музея, антропологические манекены, первые выставки и предпосылки создания первой постоянной экспозиции. Вторая глава охватывает советский период истории музея: она посвящена первой экспозиции, а также изменениям, которые сопровождали экспозиции 1920-1930-х гг. в связи с изменениями внутри страны. Также в главе освещаются события послевоенного восстановления, волна нового экспозиционного строительства 1960-1970-х гг., и кризис в музее в период предперестроечного времени. Третья глава посвящена изменениям в экспозиции музея после распада СССР, а также поиску новых решений, переосмыслению экспозиционного пространства музея и его саморефлексии. Актуальность исследования заключается в том, что тема развития экспозиции в Российском этнографическом музее была описана фрагментарно предшествующими исследователями. На сегодняшний день отсутствует последовательное описание трансформаций экспозиционного пространства Этнографического музея. Данное исследование является попыткой внести свой вклад в развитие темы.

The purpose of the final qualifying work the study of the change of the exposition of the Russian Ethnographic Museum in the context of socio-cultural transformations in Russia. The object of study is the exposition of the museum, and the subject is the process of its transformation, depending on the socio-cultural changes in the country. The main chronological framework of the study is the period from 1923 to 2012, beginning with the opening of the first exhibition for visitors and ending with the one of the last expositions in the halls of Central Asia and the South Caucasus. The work contains ninety-five pages and consists of an introduction, three chapters and a list of sources and literature. The first chapter is devoted to the pre-revolutionary period: the history of the museum building, the architectural design and its influence on the museum space, the museum's first equipment, anthropological mannequins, the first exhibitions and the prerequisites for creating the first permanent exhibition. The second chapter covers the Soviet period of the history of the museum: it is dedicated to the first exposition, as well as to the changes that accompanied the exposition of 1920-1930's due to changes inside the country. Also, the chapter highlights the process of the postwar reconstruction, the wave of the new exposition construction of the 1960-1970s, and the crisis in the museum during the pre-perestroika period. The third chapter is devoted to the changes in the exposition of the museum after the collapse of the USSR, as well as the search for new solutions, the rethinking of the exposition space of the museum and its self-reflection. The relevance of the research is enhanced due to the fact that the theme of the development of the exposition in the Russian Ethnographic Museum has been described fragmentarily by previous scholars. For today there is no consistent description of the transformations of the exposition space of the Ethnographic Museum. This study is an attempt to make a contribution to the research field.
