The appanage princes of the first third of the 16th century: Dmitry of Uglich and Semyon of Kaluga

Abstract

В работе исследуется жизнь и деятельность удельных князей Дмитрия Ивановича Углицкого (1481-1521) и Семена Ивановича Калужского (1487-1518). Затрагиваются такие темы, как участие князей в военных кампаниях, их внутренняя политика в уделах, отношения с великим князем Василием III. Автор пришел к следующим выводам: -удельные князья принимали участия в важных военных походах против Литвы и Казани, но не из-за личных полководческих способностей, а как близкие родственники великого князя; -внутренняя политика в удельных княжествах не всегда восстановима из-за недостатка источников, но можно сказать, что она отвечала интересам населения уделов. Дмитрий и Семен остались в памяти местного населения в положительном образе; -Дмитрий Углицкий и Семен Калужский не претендовали на власть в Московском государстве, но старались сохранить влияние в своих княжествах. В то же время, Василий не пытался насильственно ликвидировать удельную систему, но хотел держать удельных князей под своим полным контролем. Последнее обстоятельство приводило к конфликтам Дмитрия и Семена с великим князем, хотя они не переходили в открытое противостояние. Работа состоит из введения, трех глав, заключения, списка сокращений, списка источников и списка литературы.

The work investigates the life and activities of the appanage princes Dmitry Ivanovich of Uglich (1481-1521) and Semyon Ivanovich of Kaluga (1487-1518). Such topics as princes' participation in military campaigns, their internal policy in the appanages, relations with Grand Prince Vasily III are touched upon. The author came to the following conclusions: -the appanage princes took part in the important military campaigns against Lithuania and Kazan, not because of personal military abilities, but as close relatives of the Grand Prince; -Internal policy in individual appanages is not always recoverable due to a lack of sources, but it can be said that it met the interests of the people of the lands. Dmitry and Semyon remained in the memory of the local people in a positive way; -Dmitry of Uglich and Semyon of Kaluga did not claim power in the Moscow state, but tried to maintain influence in their appanages. At the same time, Vasily did not try to forcefully abolish the appanage system, but wanted to keep the princes under his own control. The latter circumstance led to the conflicts between Dmitry and Semyon and the Grand Prince, although they did not go into open confrontation. The work consists of the introduction, three chapters, the conclusion, the list of abbreviations, the list of sources and the list of references.
