Grotesques in St Petersburg interiors of the 19th century. Restoration of the Papal Gallery painting in St Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design

Abstract

В ходе проведённой работы был рассмотрен феномен гротеска, и в частности гротескового канделябра как уникального принципа организации декоративной композиции. Кроме того, была освещена история гротеска, начиная с античности вплоть до периода модерна, и обозначены основные этапы эволюции гротескового орнамента в различные исторические эпохи. Были выявлены памятники петербургской архитектуры XIX-го века в интерьерах которых использованы гротесковые росписи, а также определены основные типы наиболее воспроизводимых в петербургских интерьерах периода историзма композиций и мотивов гротескового орнамента и найдены их помпейские прообразы. Что особенно важно, был документирован гротесковый декор в залах Дома министра государственных имуществ, прежде мало освещенный в литературе о Петербурге. Также был осуществлен комплекс натурных и лабораторных исследований гротесковой росписи на падуге Папской галереи в СПбГХПА им. А. Л. Штиглица, подбор методики реставрации этих росписей, и выполнены первоочередные консервационные мероприятия.

The work is dedicated to the research into grotesque phenomenon, and, in particular, the grotesque candelabrum as the unique principle of building a decorative composition. It also highlights history of the grotesque from Antiquity to Art Nouveau, and outlines the main evolution stages of the grotesque ornament in various historical epochs. This research identifies objects of Saint Petersburg architecture of the 19th century in the interiors of which grotesque paintings appear, and classifies the main types of compositions and grotesque ornamental motifs which were repeatedly reproduced in St. Petersburg interiors; their Pompeian prototypes were found there as well. An important point is that the grotesque decor in the halls of the House of the Minister of State Property previously barely lit in literature about St. Petersburg is now well documented in our work. In addition, it contains results of the whole complex of pilot and laboratory studies of the grotesque painting on the ceiling of the Pope’s Gallery in St. Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design; the process of selection of methods for the restoration of these paintings is described, and primary conservation measures are executed.
