Vocabulary of the Naming Ceremonies in the Tatar Language in Dialect, Folk and Ethnographic Texts

Abstract

The naming ceremony is of particular interest not only in the ethnographic aspect, but due to its archaic structure and diversity of the language. Based on the dialect, folklore and ethnographic texts, this article presents ethno-linguistic analysis as to what vocabulary is used in the naming ceremonies in the Tatar language. The naming ceremony, in Tatar traditional culture, is a combination of ancient rituals, which reflect archaic lexical units enshrined in the anthroponymic system of Tatars. An anthroponymic unit is approached as a verbal code in the traditional Tatar culture. The article shows different traditions and magical beliefs in rituals of naming. Refs 28.
