World literature in the universities of Russian empire: the legacy of academician N. P. Dashkevich (1852–1908)

Abstract

The article is devoted to the development of Russian scientific literature, on the basis of an examination of foreign literature in the second half of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century. Normally, presentations of “Neophilology” are limited to the school of A. N. Veselovskii. This article examines a more general context of the evolution of this field, including the development of the department of history of Western literature at the University of Kiev, Moscow, Kharkov, Kazan and Odessa. Principle attention will be paid to research on the relationship of foreign literature and books on Russian and Ukrainian history in the legacy of Academician Imperial Academy of Sciences N. P. Dashkevich (professor at the University of St. Vladimir in Kiev). It also considers the impact of the university on the development of comparative science of Russian literature in general. Refs 43.
