The poetic imagery of the Indian tradition: Reflection in the poetry of Agyeya

Abstract

АННОТАЦИЯ

Магистерская диссертация Таран Александры Ярославовны на тему «Поэтические образы индийской традиции и их отражение в творчестве Агьеи» представляет собой обзор традиционной системы образов на примере санскритской лирической поэзии малых форм, а также анализ образов и ключевых средств выразительности в подборке стихотворений одного из ведущих поэтов-модернистов хинди XX века на предмет того, насколько и в каком качестве поэзия индийского модерна сохраняет связь с индийскими традиционными представлениями о достоинствах поэзии и поэтическом мастерстве. В ходе написания диссертации автором был поставлен и решен ряд задач: - подбор оптимального источника для исследования классической санскритской образной системы. По ряду причин в качестве такого источника были взяты лирические строфы из антологии Видьякары «Субхашитаратнакоша» - «Сокровищница драгоценных строф»; - художественный перевод санскритских строф; - анализ образов и попытка привести наблюдения и тенденции в систему; - подбор источника для исследования поэзии индийского модерна. В качестве такого источника были взяты стихотворения из трех сборников поэта Агьеи – основателя индийского модернизма, среди которых самый известный и многократно цитируемый в работах исследователей сборник - «В скольких лодках - сколько раз»; - художественный перевод отобранных стихотворений; - анализ основных образов и средств выразительности, характерных для поэзии Агьеи; - выявление характера связи традиционных индийских эстетических категорий и эстетических установок, присущих индийскому модернизму на примере творчества Агьеи. Структура работы следует порядку указанных задач и состоит из двух основных частей, которые в свою очередь подразделяются на подглавы для удобства подачи и восприятия материала. Также у работы есть введение, заключение и приложение с переводами. Список литературы и источников насчитывает порядка 50 наименований.

SUMMARY

“The Poetic imagery of the Indian tradition: Reflection in the poetry of Agyeya”- is the Master’s thesis performed by Aleksandra Taran. Basically the research can be subdivided into two key parts, one being a review of the traditional Sanskrit imagery outlining Indian aesthetic values and poetical standards typical of Sanskrit lyric poetry of classical period, while the other attempts to analyse whether the imagery discussed has any reflection in modern Hindi poetry; to what extent it is possible for the new poetry to revolt against the tradition and at which points it is still dependent on the aesthetic habits incessantly moulded throughout the illustrious centuries of becoming of the classical Indian arts and thought.

To carry out the research the following steps appeared inevitable to be undertaken, a number of problems to be posed and solved: - selection of the material to conduct a close-up study of the Indian classical imagery and aesthetic values. After careful consideration Sanskrit lyric stanzas were chosen for the purpose and picked out of the celebrated “Anthology of Refined Verse” collected by Vidyakara, a Buddhist monk and scholar; - selection of the material to study modern Hindi poetry. The choice has fallen on the works of a leading, most profound and subtle poet of the XX century – the founder of the modernist current in Hindi poetry – Agyeya. All in all poems for analysis and translation were picked out of three collections of his verse including the most famous and acknowledged collection “How Many Times in How Many Boats”; - literary translation of the poems chosen; - analysing of the imagery and a try to structure and generalise the findings; - a try to detect the way of traditional imagery penetration and the scale thereof into the modernist poetry of Agyeya.

The structure of the Master’s thesis corresponds to the above-mentioned steps of the research process and is branched into two main bodies: one deals with the traditional poetry while the other covers the modern, and those in their turn fall into smaller chapters as a matter of convenience. A preface, conclusion and an appendix with translations also make part of the thesis. The list of the literature referred to and quoted on the subject contains about fifty titles.
