Trade terminology in the Quran: A contextual analysis

Магистерская диссертация посвящена анализу закономерностей случаев использования торговой лексики в Коране. Целью работы является установление связи между контекстом ниспослания Корана и использованием торговой лексики в качестве метафор, описывающих взаимоотношения между богом и человеком. В первой главе приводится краткий очерк социально-экономической ситуации в Аравии в н. VII в.н.э. В следующей главе описываются особенности использования торговых терминов в Коране. Далее приводится список торговых терминов, которые используются в качестве метафор, а также данные относительно их распространенности в тексте Корана согласно хронологии ниспослания Корана. Заключительная глава посвящена анализу закономерностей соотнесения распределения использованных в качестве метафор торговых терминов с хронологией и контекстом ниспослания Корана. Среди основных работ по метафорическому использованию торговых терминов в Коране были использованы докторская диссертация Ч.К.Торри (Torrey, 1892), статьи П.Кроун (Crone, 2005) и А.Риппина (Rippin, 1996). Хронология ниспослания Корана была принята в соответствии с предложенной Т.Нёльдеке схемой (по: Резван, 2014). Основным источником базовых сведений о Коране послужили работы Е.А. Резвана (Резван, 1991, 2001, 2014). Для подсчета частоты использования торговых терминов был использован корпус Корана (The Quranic Arabic Corpus. URL: http://www.corpus.quran.com). В ходе исследования был проведен подсчет использованных в Коране в метафорическом значении торговых терминов. Затем их распределение в тексте Корана было соотнесено с хронологическими периодами ниспослания. На основании полученных данных можно сделать следующие выводы. Система метафорически используемой торговой лексики, описывающая религиозные реалии в терминах торговли, свидетельствует о важности коммерции для общества, которому был ниспослан Коран, его хозяйственном укладе и общественных ценностях. Частотность употребления этих метафор в мекканских и мединских сурах сопоставима и не может, как и употребление конкретных образов и сравнений, служить основанием для того, чтобы предполагать какие-то различия в важности торговли для жителей Мекки и Йасриба (Медины). Использование разных групп метафор зависит в первую очередь от содержания соответствующих аятов, их адресатов и конкретных обстоятельств, в которых они были ниспосланы.

The thesis is dedicated to the analysis of economic terms' usage patterns in the Quran. The goal of the study is to find a correlation of consistent patterns of economic terms used as metaphors describing relations between the man and the God, and the context of Quranic Revelation. The first chapter contains a short outline of social and economic situation in the Arabia in the beginning of 7th century A.D. In the following chapter features of trade terms usage in the Quran are described. After that we compiled a list of commercial terms used as metaphors together with the data concerning their distribution in the text of the Quran according to the chronology of the Revelation. The final chapter contains analysis of the correlation between the distribution of the terms used as metaphors and the context of the Revelation. The main cited works about the metaphorical usage of commercial terms in the Quran are those of C.C.Torrey (Torrey, 1892), and the articles of P.Crone (Crone, 2005) and A.Rippin (Rippin, 1996). The chronology of the Quranic Revelation was chosen according to the scheme suggested by Th.Noeldeke (cited by: E.A.Rezvan, 2014, in Russian). The works of E.A.Rezvan (Rezvan, 1991, 2001, 2014) were the main source of basic information in the field of the Quranic Studies. The Quranic Arabic Corpus (URL: http://www.corpus.quran.com) was used to calculate the quantitative characteristics of commercial terminology distribution in the text of the Quran. During the study the calculation of the exact figures of commercial terms used metaphorically was conducted, and then the obtained data was compared with the chronological circumstances of the Revelation. The findings allowed us to made several conclusions. First, the system of commercial terms used as metaphors which describe religious concepts as terms of commercial transactions shows the importance of trade for the society of the Revelation and tells about its economic conditions and social values. Second, the frequency of the metaphorical usage in Makki and Madani suras is comparable and thus cannot serve as a foundation for assuming difference in the importance of trade for inhabitants of Mecca and Yathrib (Medina). It is also impossible to make such assumptions based on the usage of certain terms in different historical periods as well. It can be finally concluded that the usage of different metaphorical groups depends primarily on the content of the correspondent ayah’s, their addressees and circumstances of the Revelation.
