The estimation of the formation time of potential glacial lakes: a case study of the Mongun-Taiga mountain massif

На фоне продолжающегося изменения современных климатических условий, возможность прорывов ледниковых озер является серьезной проблемой и будет возрастать в будущем по причине продолжающейся дегляциации. Освобождение около 1100 км2 ложа ледников Алтая в сочетании с увеличением туристического потока и высокой сейсмической активностью привело к резкому росту потенциальной опасности для населения и инфраструктуры нижележащих территорий. Значимость прогноза места и времени образования ледниковых озёр возрастает, в особенности для территории Алтая. С использованием разработанного в данной работе алгоритма было оценено время формирования потенциальных приледниковых озер горного массива Монгун-Тайга. Алгоритм включает этапы от определения местоположения будущего озера до оценки времени освобождения его чаши ото льда. Он состоит для двух блоков: блок расчета баланса массы и блок расчета объема льда. Для их работы достаточно минимального набора информации. Алгоритм учитывает изменение геометрии ледника и климатических условий со временем. В результате были получены данные о времени начала и окончания формирования пяти приледниковых озер горного массива Монгун-Тайга. Дан прогноз увеличения здесь системы озер за счет формирования одиночных озер и каскадов. В связи с чем было выявлено, что в будущем произойдет рост потенциального риска для нижележащих территорий.

Against the background of ongoing changes in modern climatic conditions, the possibility of glacial lake breakthroughs is a serious problem and will increase in the future due to ongoing deglaciation. The liberation of about 1,100 km2 of the Altai glacier bed, combined with an increase in tourist flow and high seismic activity, led to a sharp increase in the potential danger to the population and infrastructure of the underlying territories. The significance of the forecast of the place and time of the formation of glacial lakes is increasing, especially for the territory of Altai. Using the algorithm developed in this paper, the time of formation of potential glacial lakes of the Mongun-Taiga mountain massif was estimated. The algorithm includes the steps from determining the location of the future lake to estimating the time of the release of its bowl from ice. It consists of two blocks: a block for calculating the mass balance and a block for calculating the volume of ice. A minimal set of information is sufficient for their work. The algorithm takes into account changes in glacier geometry and climatic conditions over time. As a result, data were obtained on the time of the beginning and end of the formation of five glacial lakes of the Mongun-Taiga mountain range. The forecast of an increase in the lake system here due to the formation of single lakes and cascades is given. In this connection, it was revealed that in the future there will be an increase in the potential risk for the underlying territories.
