Symbolic politics in 1970-2020 American cinema: a study of the representation of the US South

Abstract

В работе исследуются репрезентация Юга США в национальном американском кинематографе с 1970-х гг. по настоящее время через теоретико-методологическую призму символической политики. А также рассматривается гипотеза о взаимосвязи между вектором символического кинодискурса и циклами американской политической системы.

В качестве выборки были выбраны 50 самых кассовых фильмов каждого года в американском кинопрокате, начиная с 1970-х, а затем проведён анализ каждого десятилетия в выделением характерных черт кинематографической репрезентации Юга внутри данного периода. Впоследствии данные были сведены и сопоставлены с циклами американской политической системы.

В конечном итоге, после ряда корректировок и привлечения дополнительных теоретических подходов, гипотеза была подтверждена.

The paper analyzes the representation of the South of the USA in the national American cinema from the 1970s to the present through the theoretical and methodological prism of symbolic politics. The hypothesis of the relationship between the vector of symbolic film discourse and the cycles of the American political system is also considered.

The 50 highest-grossing films of each year in the American film distribution since the 1970s were selected as a sample, and then an analysis of each decade was carried out, highlighting the characteristic features of the cinematic representation of the South within this period. Subsequently, the data were compiled and compared with the cycles of the American political system.

Eventually, after a number of adjustments and the involvement of additional theoretical approaches, the hypothesis was confirmed.
