Linguistic means of expressing multilingualism in Amin Maalouf’s works

Abstract

На сегодняшний день феномен мультилингвизма стал довольно распространенным явлением, что, несомненно, находит отражение и в литературе. В художественном тексте явление многоязычия реализуется разными способами, среди которых можно отметить иноязычные единицы и отражение иноязычных реалий. Целью работы было выявить языковые и экстралингвистические средства выражения мультилингвизма в языке французского писателя ливанского происхождения Амина Маалуфа. Практическую базу исследования составили три произведения А. Маалуфа разных периодов: исторический роман «Samarcande» (1988), роман «Les Désorientés» (2012), эссе «Le Naufrage des Civilisations» (2019). Основные методы исследования: анализ дефиниций, контекстный анализ, а также функциональный подход к рассмотрению средств выражения мультилингвизма. По итогам исследования сделан вывод об особенностях идиостиля А. Маалуфа, отмечены основные тенденции введения автором иноязычий в текст, выявлена зависимость функциональных особенностей иноязычной лексики и способов выражения мультилингвизма от жанровой принадлежности произведений и периода творческой деятельности. Практически значимым представляется обобщение теоретического материала по теме изучения многоязычия. Кроме того, рассмотрен феномен мультилингвизма в литературно-художественном аспекте, сделаны наблюдения за функционалом иноязычных элементов в текстах писателя-мультилингва.

At present, multilingualism has indeed become a common phenomenon, which is reflected in the literature. In a literary text, the phenomenon of multilingualism is realized in different ways, among which foreign language units and the reflection of foreign language realities can be noted. The aim of the work was to identify linguistic and extralinguistic means of expressing multilingualism in the language of the French writer of Lebanese origin, Amin Maalouf. The practical basis of the study was three works by A. Maalouf from different periods: the historical novel "Samarcande" (1988), the novel "Les Désorientés" (2012), and the essay "Le Naufrage des Civilizations" (2019). Main research methods include the analysis of definitions, contextual analysis, and a functional approach to the consideration of the expression means of multilingualism. Based on the results of the study, a conclusion was drawn about the features of A. Maalouf's idiostyle, the main trends in the insertion of foreign languages into the text by the author were noted, and the dependence of the functional features of foreign vocabulary and ways of expressing multilingualism on the genre of works and the period of creative activity was revealed. Practically significant is the generalization of theoretical material on the topic of studying multilingualism. In addition, the phenomenon of multilingualism in the literary and artistic aspects is considered, and observations are made of the functionality of foreign language elements in the texts of a multilingual writer.
