Mahdism and Sufi brotherhoods of Sudan in 1881-1898

Abstract

Высокая степень религиозности и господство традиционных институтов, сохраняющиеся по сей день, придают суфийским братствам особую значимость при изучении любого аспекта истории Судана на всех ее этапах. При этом деятельность данных институтов во время восстания Махди и государства его халифа Абдаллаха (1881-1898 гг.) практически не освещается исследователями, несмотря на активное изучение рассматриваемого периода в экономическом, политическом, социальном и прочих аспектах. Данная работа посвящена рассмотрению взаимоотношений между суфийскими братствами и представителями движения Махди в Судане. В ней была изложена краткая история суфийских братств Судана; проанализированы восстание Махди и процесс создания махдистского государства его халифом Абдаллахом с точки зрения борьбы с внутренней политической и идеологической оппозицией; выявлены основные силы, выступившие против Махди; определено отношение каждого крупного суфийского братства к восстанию Махди, а также описано отношение Махди и Абдаллаха к этим братствам. Результаты исследования углубляют знания о роли суфийских братств в Судане накануне ХХ в., а также помогают взглянуть на восстание Махди под новым ракурсом.

The high degree of religiosity and the dominance of traditional institutions, which persist to this day, give the Sufi brotherhoods a special significance in the study of any aspect of Sudanese history at all its stages. At the same time, the activities of these institutions during the uprising of the Mahdi and the state of his caliph Abdallah (1881-1898) are practically not covered by researchers, despite the active study of the period in economic, political, social and other aspects. This work focuses on the relationship between the Sufi brotherhoods and representatives of the Mahdi movement in Sudan. It gives a brief history of the Sufi brotherhoods of the Sudan; analyzes the uprising of the Mahdi and the process of creating of the Mahdist state by his caliph Abdallah from perspective of the fight against internal political and ideological opposition; the main forces that opposed the Mahdi are identified; the attitude of each major Sufi brotherhood to the Mahdi uprising is determined, and the attitude of Mahdi and Abdallah to these brotherhoods is also described. The results of the study deepen knowledge about the role of Sufi brotherhoods in Sudan on the eve of the XXth century, and also help to look at the Mahdi uprising from a new angle.
