The translation of English "magic"’ vocabulary into Russian (a case study of the Novels about Harry Potter by J.Rowling)

Abstract

В работе рассматривается «волшебная» лексика в романах о Гарри Поттере Дж.Роулинг. Цель исследования - изучение семантических, морфологических, структурных и лингвокультурологических особенностей ВЛ, а также анализ переводов «волшебной» лексики на русский язык, выполненных М. Спивак и переводчиками издательства РОСМЭН, и выявление закономерностей передачи «волшебной» лексики средствами русского языка. В работе рассмотрены две группы трудностей при переводе «волшебной» лексики на русский язык: лингвистические и лингвокультурологические. Лингвистические проблемы включают словотворчество, игру слов, различные фонетические явления, авторские трансформации фразеологических единиц. Лингвокультурологические трудности связаны с культурно специфическими ассоциациями, характерными для представителей определенной культуры, а также с отсутствием эквивалентов в языке перевода. В ходе исследования проанализированы два перевода, а также выявлены наиболее часто употребляемые приемы перевода «волшебной» лексики.

The work focuses upon the problem of "magical" vocabulary in the novels about Harry Potter by J.Rowling. The purpose of the research is to study the semantic, morphological, structural and cultural and linguistic features of the "magical" vocabulary, to analyze the peculiarities/features of the Russian translations by M. Spivak and the translators of ROSMAN publishing house and to identify the ways of conveying the "magical" vocabulary by means of the Russian language. Two groups of translating difficulties are considered in the paper: linguistic and linguoculturological. The linguistic problems include the translation of nonce-words, wordplay, various phonetic phenomena, the author’s transformations of phraseological units. Linguistic and cultural difficulties are related with culturally specific associations characteristic of the culture, as well as the lack of equivalents in the target language. In the course of the study, two translations have been analysed, and the most frequently used translation methods have been identified.
