Rendering occasionalisms in multiple English-Russian translations: A case study of Frank Herbert’s novel "Dune"

Данная выпускная квалификационная работа, выполненная на материале научно-фантастического романа Ф. Герберта «Дюна», посвящена определению основных проблем при передаче окказионализмов в множественных англо-русских переводах и сравнительному анализу переводческих решений относительно формирования и выбора вариантов перевода окказионализмов. В работе рассматриваются основные способы перевода и создания собственно-переводческих окказионализмов, использующиеся для достижения эквивалентности, а также феномен множественных переводов. В результате проведенного исследования было выявлено, что на выбор способа перевода влияют способ образования, контекст употребления окказионализма, стилистика текста. Также было определено, что наиболее частотными способами перевода стали транслитерация и транскрипция, аффиксальные модели словообразования, грамматические трансформации, синонимичные лексемы. Результаты лингвокогнитивного эксперимента показали, что восприятие окказионализмов русскоязычными реципиентами зависит от языковой подготовки читателей, соответствия стилю текста, методов образования окказионализмов, а также степени употребления лексем в повседневном языке.

This thesis, based on Dune, a sci-fi novel by F. Herbert, focuses on major issues in rendering occasionalisms in multiple English-to-Russian translations and a comparative study of the translators’ approaches to the formation and choice of translation variants. Our investigation has shown that the choice is influenced by the structure of a particular original neologism and the context of its use. This work describes the main translation strategies for creating varying occasionalisms with a view to achieving equivalence; due attention is also paid to the multiple translation issue per se. The study has established that the choice of translation methods is influenced by the word-formation of the original occasionalism, the immediate context of its use and by the style and genre of the source text. The most frequently employed occasionalism translation methods are shown to be transliteration and transcription, affixational word formation, grammatical transformations, and the use of synonymic lexical items. The linguo-cognitive experiment conducted within the framework of our research shows that the perception of translated occasionalisms by Russian-speaking recipients depends on their own linguistic background, on the conformity of the translated neologism to the text style, on the word-building principle chosen and on whether or not the occasionalism under consideration belongs to everyday vocabulary.
